Goochland Veterans Project

On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we honor the legacy of the millions who served our nation during the Vietnam War. On March 29, 1973, the last American combat troops left Vietnam. More than three million Americans served in-country during the war and 58,281 men and women made the ultimate sacrifice. We continue to lose Vietnam veterans every day as a result of the war’s lingering effects. Many Vietnam veterans returned home to a divided country and, at times, little to no respect for their service. Today, we honor all they gave for their country. Together, we will continue to show our gratitude for our Vietnam veterans and work to ensure their service and sacrifices are never forgotten. 24 students, 3 families, and one of our veterans all joined us at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia for @WreathsAcross America to honor our service members who have passed by laying wreaths on veterans graves. A great day for #CommunityService 🌲

We’re excited to share that Chatham High in @PittsCoSchools has officially launched its own Veterans Project under the mentorship of our director, Mrs. Tate! Honored to see this work grow and empower even more students to learn from the heroes in their communities. 🇺🇸✨

Friday night, we had the honor of hosting U.S. Army veteran, Donald Owens as an honorary @GHSFootball captain! 🇺🇸 He was joined on the field by his granddaughter, Maya, a senior intern. Thank you for your service, Mr. Owens!🏈

Yesterday morning, four of our senior interns and Mrs. Tate had the honor of speaking to the Richmond Marine Corps League about the GHS Veterans Project. 🇺🇸 They shared how our veterans inspire, teach, and make a lasting impact on our students.

This week, our students mailed 75 handwritten cards to their veterans, as a small way to say thank you for their service and friendship. 🇺🇸✉️ We’re also sending thank yous to our amazing sponsors, including @ChickfilA 288 & Broad, for their continued support!

A special Homecoming Friday night at GHS! 🇺🇸🏈 Fourteen veterans joined us on the sidelines for the National Anthem, and we were honored to have U.S. Army veteran Mr. Marvin Farmer perform the coin toss. What a great day to be a Bulldog! 🐾

The festivities continued for our 1st home game of the season! 🇺🇸🏈 We honored both those who served our country and those who serve our county for First Responders Night. And we got to honor SSG Maupin (@GoochlandGovtVA Sheriff’s deputy and @USArmy veteran) with the coin toss!

Today’s Interview Day brought 88 students + 40 veterans together for a morning of stories, service, and connection. Students practiced oral history skills, learned from living primary sources, and built intergenerational friendships with our veterans. 🇺🇸

GHS would like to welcome Mr. Matthew Gills as one of our new CTE teachers. He will be teaching our Small Engine Repairs and Utility Heavy Construction courses this year. He comes to us from Central VA and served 8 years in the US Marine Corps! We are thrilled to have him join!

This AM our director Mrs. Tate flew in a Blackhawk with @VaNationalGuard and brought @GoochlandHigh friends along. Tonight 8 of our new interns joined @VirginiaMuseum 81st D-Day anniversary event w/ @VaNationalGuard @museum63441 - our students got to wear WWII uniforms to teach!
