Amy Carlson, better known as “Mother God,” was the leader of the cult Love Has Won. She convinced her followers that she was God, a 19-billion-year-old being, and that she could heal people from cancer with the power of love. Amy also claimed she had lived 534 past lives, including Cleopatra, Jesus Christ, Harriet Tubman, and Marilyn Monroe. But in 2020, her own health began to collapse. She became extremely ill and was reportedly paralyzed from the neck down. At one point, Amy begged her followers to take her to a hospital, but they refused. She died in April 2021 at the age of 45. When police later found her body, it had been dead for weeks. Her mummified corpse was wrapped in a sleeping bag and Christmas lights, with glitter around her face and empty eye sockets. Authorities described it as a makeshift shrine. Seven members of the group were later charged with abuse of a corpse.

It’s one of the most disturbing reminders that appearances can be completely misleading. What happened in that case isn’t just about violence—it’s about isolation, untreated mental illness, and how a quiet exterior can hide something deeply fractured underneath. Still, nothing about it takes away from how horrifying the crimes were or the lives destroyed.

It’s a reminder of how fragile trust and safety inside a home can be, and how deeply such actions affect everyone connected to them.

In 2007, 13-year-old Paris Bennett murdered his 4-year-old sister, Ella, inside their home in Texas. He waited until their mother was at work, convinced the babysitter to leave, then went into Ella’s room and stabbed her 17 times. Bennett later said the attack was not a loss of control. It was meant to punish his mother by taking away the person she loved most. He admitted he chose not to kill his mother because he wanted her to live with the pain for the rest of her life. Bennett pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. After serving 20 years, Paris will become eligible for parole next year.
