🆘🆘 PEACHES (ID 250024), 2 YO, MALE – IN MANHATTAN ACC - came into the shelter as an owner surrender on 3/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal. 🆘🆘 😿 😿 😿 😿 ➡️TBD 5/5/26 ➡️ TOO LOW ON PLEDGES TO STIMULATE RESCUE INTEREST ➡️ 🆘🆘 2ND Chance on Emergency Placement List – VERY URGENT – 🆘🆘 😱🔥🔥😱 ➡️ 46 DAYS IN SHELTER – TOO LONG – TIME IS RUNNING OUT ➡️ PEACHES IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS - He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.🔥🔥🔥🔥 A volunteer writes: Peaches is a handsome boy only about two years old and he was brought to us when his owner could no longer care for him. One thing to know about Peaches is he absolutely loves treats, and I think that is the way of his heart. He is a bit timid right now so he ate treats that were next to my hand and gave my hand a few sniffs, however is not ready to be pet yet. He enjoyed to remain in the comfort of his cubby, while giving my hand a few sniffs and eating all of the treats I gave him. I think he is a cat that would appreciate someone who is willing to be patient with him and let him take things at his own pace. He is trying his best to be brave in this new environment and I can tell how badly he wants to interact, but he is a bit hesitant to do so. Peaches tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻 NEEDS OUT OF SHELTER ASAP – Please RT or pledge, if you can, to save this little one. @AdamsPaulGrimke 💔😿🙏Thank you

🆘🆘 LUNA (ID 251209), 5 YO, FEMALE – IN MANHATTAN ACC - came into the shelter as an owner surrender on 4/3/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people. 🆘🆘 😿 😿 😿 😿 ➡️TBD 5/5/26 ➡️ NEW HOPE PARTNER RESCUE ONLY ➡️ TOO LOW ON PLEDGES TO STIMULATE RESCUE INTEREST ➡️🆘🆘 7th Chance on Emergency Placement List – ON BORROWED TIME – SHELTER AT CAPACITY- NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT/HELP LUNA - HIGHEST EU/SILENT KILL RISK –🆘🆘 😱🔥🔥😱 ➡️ 31 DAYS IN SHELTER – TOO LONG – TIME IS RUNNING OUT ➡️ LUNA IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS - She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.🔥🔥🔥🔥 A volunteer writes: We're determined to meet Luna halfway as working through the shelter days stretching before her seems to be written all across her face. She could be charmingly indifferent to our efforts, but it could also be that we haven't quite been able to catch her interest just yet. We don't really have much to go by as Luna was abandoned in the shelter vestibule with no information. Loafing on top of her den, she may be considering the stream of variables or perhaps her current and unenviable job of telling us everything about who she is now. It's a big job and we'd love to be helpful, but each time we've tried to get started on the right foot with her, we've promptly been told it isn't the right time. I imagine her sighing to herself as she returns to her thoughts. Luna may not be sure how to ask for the second chance she needs, which may be where meeting her halfway comes in, because we're asking you to please give her one. ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻 NEEDS OUT OF SHELTER ASAP – Please RT or pledge, if you can, to save this little one. @AdamsPaulGrimke 💔😿🙏Thank you

🆘🆘 TINKER (ID 248330), 7 YO, FEMALE – IN MANHATTAN ACC - came into the shelter as a return on 3/30/2026. 🆘🆘 😿 😿 😿 😿 🆘🆘 UPDATE – UPDATE – POOR TINKER WAS RETURNED TO THE EPL ON 4/30 – LITERALLY ON BORROWED TIME NOW – BEYOND URGENT – LET’S HELP HER GET SAFE 🆘🆘 ➡️TBD 5/5/26 ➡️ NEW HOPE PARTNER RESCUE ONLY ➡️ TOO LOW ON PLEDGES TO STIMULATE RESCUE INTEREST ➡️🆘🆘 7th Chance on Emergency Placement List – ON BORROWED TIME – SHELTER AT CAPACITY- NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT/HELP TINKER - HIGHEST EU/SILENT KILL RISK –🆘🆘 😱🔥🔥😱 ➡️ 35 DAYS IN SHELTER – TOO LONG – TIME IS RUNNING OUT ➡️ TINKER IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS - Although she is social and friendly, she is not thriving in the care center. Tinker is easily overstimulated by both noises and other cats and will redirect onto handlers, making her difficult to safely interact with. This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.🔥🔥🔥🔥 A volunteer writes: Tinker has come quite a long way since her arrival a few weeks ago. Now, rather than unjustly judging me as a foe upon sight, she comes forward in hopes that I've brought my customary treats. Tinker is a gray, longish-haired lady with light-green, almond-shaped eyes who's as beautiful as a super-model and, in fact, also sufficiently underweight to walk the catwalk. She does very much like not only treats and squeeze-ups but extra servings of food, and would probably benefit from some indulgence in that regard, even though it might ruin her modeling career. When Tinker comes forward now for head scratches, I hear her sweet little purrs as she gets them. What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats or dogs. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Tinker interacts with the assessor, solicits & appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Because of her prior history and a period of time when she had trouble acclimating to the shelter we recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. She is currently on Gabapentin and we also recommend that subject to a vet's approval that she be continued on it at least for a period of time as she acclimates to her new home. ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻 NEEDS OUT OF SHELTER ASAP – Please RT or pledge, if you can, to save this little one. @AdamsPaulGrimke @mehser12 💔😿🙏Thank you

She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.🔥🔥🔥🔥 What my friends at ACC say about me: I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Mizuky then sniffs the assessor's hand and leans in hard for cheek rubs. She allows all petting. When pet along body her tail begins to swish moderately. Mizuky is slightly tense during pick up, but after being set down, comes forward to solicit more cheek pets. When the kennel is closed, she remains sitting at the front, looking at the assessor with soft almond eyes. ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻 NEEDS OUT OF SHELTER ASAP – Please RT or pledge, if you can, to save this little one. @AdamsPaulGrimke 💔😿🙏Thank you

🆘🆘 MIZUKY (ID 249984), 2 YO, FEMALE – IN QUEENS ACC - came into the shelter as an agency on 3/18/2026. 🆘🆘 😿 😿 😿 😿 ➡️TBD 5/2/26 ➡️ 🆘🆘 1ST Chance on Emergency Placement List – VERY URGENT – 🆘🆘 😱🔥🔥😱 ➡️ 44 DAYS IN SHELTER – TOO LONG – TIME IS RUNNING OUT ➡️ MIZUKY IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS - She has a bite/scratch history and continues signs of overstimulation during interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. We've assured Chirop that there's nothing he could've done differently, but we also know that to feel welcomed and wanted is a beautiful thing. It's in what we do rather than what we say, so we've been offering treats to begin a friendship and small pets here and there to build his confidence and understanding that things are going to work out just fine.

A branch fell off your oak last fall. You've been meaning to haul it to the curb. It's been on the ground for six months. In that time, it became an apartment building. Year one: Fungi colonize the exposed wood. You can see the first brackets forming on the bark — small, shelf-like growths that are breaking down the lignin and cellulose inside. The branch is getting softer. By year two or three: Beetle larvae have tunneled into the softened wood. Their galleries — winding channels the width of a pencil lead — aerate the interior. Woodpeckers find the branch and drill into it to extract the larvae. By year five: A red-backed salamander has moved into one of the beetle galleries. She lives in the damp, rotting wood and hunts pill bugs, mites, and springtails on the surface. The branch is now a hunting ground and a shelter. By year ten: The branch is mostly soil. The fungi, the beetles, the salamander, the woodpecker — they converted a fallen limb into nutrients that are feeding the tree it fell from. 🌿 A different way to see the branch: - A fallen branch is not debris — it's a building under construction - If it's not blocking a path, leave it where it fell - The fungi that colonize it aren't disease — they're decomposers doing their job - One fallen branch can support more than thirty species over its lifetime You almost hauled it to the curb. Thirty species are using it now. 🌿 #DeadWood #Decomposition #NatureReframe #BackyardEcology #HiddenEcosystem

This guy picked up a confused 16 year old dog from the shelter so he wouldn’t die alone. Months later he was galloping around the yard. If there is a Heaven, this guy is surely headed there. What would it feel like to go to the shelter and get either the oldest dog there or the dog who has been there the longest? GOALS.
