Exclusive: Lord Mandelson has not been asked to hand over WhatsApp messages or texts from his personal phone amid mounting concern about the limited nature of the government’s disclosures The peer handed over his work mobile when he was sacked as ambassador to the US because of his friendship with the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein But he has not been asked by the Cabinet Office for any of the messages on his personal device It has been left to a group of a dozen officials to attempt to “reconstruct” the contents of Mandelson’s phone by asking ministers and officials for their correspondence with the peer The Times has been told that the Cabinet Office was so concerned about the limited nature of the disclosures that it has asked people for messages from their personal devices It is also now asking people for group WhatsApp messages that involved Mandelson, having initially refrained from doing so Mandelson used his personal mobile in the run-up to his appointment as ambassador before switching over to a work mobile just under a month into the role. He resumed using his personal mobile on his return to the UK after he was sacked in September The Tories said that under the terms of the “humble address”, a parliamentary mechanism that forces the government to disclose information, the Cabinet Office should have requested the messages from Mandelson. There we go. Literally as I predicted. No.10 are clearing the way for saying the bulk of McSweeney’s communications with Mandelson have been lost. But the rules will be tightened in the future.

It’s definitely possible to lose WhatsApp messages if your phone is stolen. I didn’t realise mine weren’t backing up and lost about a years worth when I changed phones. It was very annoying but I should have checked.
Also, I’m not the prime minister’s chief of staff…

@JamesCleverly My 14 year old daughters iPhone and WhatsApp are all backed up to the cloud. They are clearly lying but also need to be asked why this phone was not being back up. Yet Conservatives do the exact same thing with WhatsApp. All the same

There should not have been anything on McSweeney’s phone about the appointment of Mandelson that wasn’t forwarded to the Civil Service.

Oh look - here are the rules on using WhatsApp that senior officials are required to follow: - They should forward on messages onto government systems, simple screenshots will do - they can ask civil servants to help them do this

This is a huge cover up, there is no way in the world that the CoS to the PM would have his phone stolen (presumably with an ability to track location) and is treated in this way. Security & Intel Cttee needs to get involved and bring everyone involved as a witness. Where is the Cabinet Secretariat? This is a massive breach of NatSec. and somehow nonchalantly the Police do nothing! 👇🏽

The police response to Morgan McSweeney having his phone stolen in October last year seems bizarre As phones go his was about as sensitive as it gets. The number of every cabinet minister and the prime minister. Messages with all of them. Emails, text messages. You name it If you were a hostile state looking for an insight into what was going on in government at that time/ kompromat it's probably about as good as it gets And yet they treated him in the same way as tens of thousands of people are treated every year when their phones are stolen They gave him a crime reference number. Officers didn't speak to him. They didn't conduct an investigation. They just closed the case Now that's not to say they could have tracked down the thief - he was on an e-bike and wearing a balaclava for one. It's just the lack of any further investigation seems odd, although I'm sure it will be familiar to many of the 70,000+ people who reported their mobiles stolen last year More on our podcast The State of It pod.fo/e/3bdacf

I’d like to know all your opinions in the comments? I’ve just paid £1.70 a litre for diesel. Why are we not opening up our gas and oil field in the North Sea? Surely by opening these and sourcing from our own reserves, we will bring our prices of fuel down, energy costs down, create jobs, bring revenue and tax into the UK economy that can be spent on the roads, the NHS, UK services and schools. We continue to source our fuel from abroad and it makes no sense to me! We should be backing our UK manufacturing and not let it go abroad! We live in very uncertain times especially what’s going on in the Middle East. Love to hear your opinion, let’s back Britain 🇬🇧 - Bosh ❤️

Trouble is we have learned that Mandy was interrogated by McSweeney and Doyle, both with a vested interest in the appointment. It’s not the process per se it’s the fact that the responsibility was apparently outsourced. That, I am afraid, we cannot get away from? 🤷🏼♂️

What cheeses me off most about this stuff is that they couldn’t contain the excitement of appointing Peter Mandelson in truth. Why? Becuase he was the @POTUS whisperer they thought they needed to deliver for Britain. US Trade deal. Chagos deal, et al. Fess up to that. Fast!

@KieranMullanUK The grounds to sack him were if he lied during recruitment process. So either starmer is over egging the importance of his conversation, or he was too incompetent to bring that into the mix at that point.

The worst of it-officially he did nothing wrong! "There is no suggestion of misconduct". They paid him because of the risk of "reputational damage". The Minister misled the house by saying that was not a consideration.

It’s psychologically horrible to have such a debt. But it doesn’t matter. She’ll never pay off her loan. She’ll pay extra 9% income tax above Plan 2 threshold, £29,385 from April, which will mean less disposable income, but after 30 years, however massive, debt will disappear.
