But when a journalist asks a plain, human question, one that tests whether any of that means anything, suddenly it's too personal. You can’t have it both ways. You don't get to trade on your family when it softens your image, then retreat behind abstraction when the question cuts too close. That's not dignity. It's not even discretion. It's the instinct of a man who has spent so long performing authenticity that he's forgotten what it actually requires. Authenticity, when it matters, costs something. And in that moment, when asked plainly, he stepped back from the very ground he’s spent years standing on. Happen, his handlers have not told him his position yet...

A minimum wage of £15 would end my coffee shop, it would have to close, as would many other businesses. I’ll explain for the economically illiterate. Staff costs are currently half our costs, a £15 minimum wage is actually more than £15 an hour for the company, because you have to add: - 12.07% holiday - Sick pay - Maternity pay if and when required - National insurance - Pension contributions These costs would mean the shop loses money because remember, energy costs are up, rates are up, regulations are up. Now you can pass these costs onto the consumer - that would mean charging a lot more for coffee, people won’t pay it. The likes of Starbucks and Costa can, because they have economies of scale. The independent doesn’t. Now the little socialist will say well this is your fault, if you can’t run a business that can afford to pay its staff properly, but the little socialist has never run a business and does not understand the dynamics. Now I could pay some staff off and fill those hours myself or reduce us to one staff member during certain periods - but this proves the point that a minimum wage costs jobs. There was a time when these jobs were done by kids, perhaps on the weekend, paid a lower wage, no holiday and no silly employment rights. Perhaps they were even paid cash. The dynamic worked and small businesses like this could operate. It was also a great first job. Sadly now it isn’t worth employing entitlement youngsters at this level of pay. So alas, I don’t need the stress, the business would close, a number of jobs would be lost. Economics is about understanding these dynamics, no vibes. The cost of living is not solved through passing on inflation to the business, it is solved by ending high inflation and creating prosperity. This is what socialists don’t understand, they can’t create prosperity, they can only destroy it.

This week Head of Met Police has: 1. Interfered in politics before local elections 2. Erased the 1st victim of a stabbing spree 3. Been exposed for ties to the Israeli Police 4. Offered 300 additional officers to a small London Jewish community RESIGN Mark Rowley Now

Weird that even the police, in their tweet, though not in the full statement itself, are just airbrushing the fact that he’s being charged with three attempted murders, not two, the third person being a Muslim man he stabbed earlier in the day

@mehdirhasan @CounsellingSam What’s particularly distasteful is that the Met’s statement is clearly political in nature following a narrative that’s been preset about terrorism, a false alarm it transpires. This is extremely important & dangerous because the police force are supposed to be totally apolitical

Why does the BBC News headline only refer to the attempted murder or two Jewish men Shloime Rand and Moshe Shine And not mention that Essa Suleiman was charged with the attempted murder of a third person, Ishmail Hussein -which sounds very much like a Muslim name Is it because it is no longer an antisemitic attack if the man is attacking Jews and Muslims?

This will not stand up legally. Zack retweeted — did not issue a statement — a questioning of the seemingly excessive use of force. The head of the Met, during purdah, wrote a two page attack as if Zack had said it. It is clear involvement in politics.

@PhilipProudfoot @snowleopardess I’m just curious as to why Essa Suleiman has been charged with attempted murder when it’s becoming increasingly clear that he’s severely mentally disturbed (he was subject to a hospital order in 2008 after the 1st time) so now surely it’s Section 18 GBH with intent? Deliberate?

This means, if you can’t read the obvious subtext, that he hasn’t been charged with a terrorism offence but attempted murder. Yet we have a 48 hour news cycle claiming otherwise, up to the insanity of suggesting the words “globalise the intifada” somehow caused this incident.

@eshelm I’ll go so far as to say that because the offender was black they auto clicked into a different arrest/subdue mode. There was no possible reason to kick him in the head repeatedly. What if he’d died as a result of their methods? Most people fear the rozzers, for good reason.

I spent several years working in close proximity with the police as a court reporter, and have always believed this is why many people join the police: to exert power over others by any means - and the rougher the better. They get off on the violence. Ditto the military.

Absolutely spot on from @mehdirhasan - it sickens me to the core to see these escalating attacks on Jews in Britain and elswhere. And as someone who is passionate about ensuring Palestinian basic human rights are respected, having witnessed what Israeli governments have done to them over decades, I have to say to those who argue that these antisemitic attacks are in any way justified because of Israel's actions - No, never. And they do nothing to advance realising rights for Palestinians and ending the genocide and regime of apartheid. They are wrong plain and simple.
