A Ukrainian soldier walked 25 kilometers with a severely injured arm — and doctors managed to save the limb.
Roman sustained serious injuries in February 2026, but despite the damage to his arm, he was able to walk 25 kilometers to an evacuation point.
In Cherkasy, surgeons, together with American specialists from the Reconstruction Mission, performed a 10-hour microsurgical operation. They transplanted a fragment of bone from his leg to his arm and reconnected the blood vessels using a free flap technique.
Doctors say this approach can replace several future surgeries and significantly improve recovery prospects. Roman now faces rehabilitation, with positive expectations for restoring the function of his arm.
