In C, a constant isn't immutable In other languages, there are ways to make constants, but in C, a const variable is just a read-only variable. While it sounds like the same thing, it truly isn't. You can still make a new non-const pointer that points to the same address, and modify the value through it. The first picture shows an example of this. This is a trick that could be useful, right? Well, do NOT use it. This behavior falls under Undefined Behavior (§6.7.3.5). Which means that the compiler is free to do anything, like doing the expected operation, or: - place it in read-only memory, throwing a segmentation fault. - optimize it out completely. - cache its value in a register, ignoring the memory write. So that's why, for example, we get different results if we optimize the program or not. And that can lead to bugs that are a horror to debug.
