Using IR activation, we explore the pseudo-JT topology defining the bimolecular collision outcomes of NO radicals with increasingly large alkanes. Upon collision, the region of strong coupling along the PES significantly impacts the occupied product quantum levels.

Today was my official last day as a postdoc. Against the odds, I have gone from undergraduate drop out to #newPI @ChemistryUoN I marked the occasion by writing 2/3rd of my first proper grant proposal in a dark room by myself. Maybe I’ll even submit it by end of summer? 🤞

We compare the dynamics from NO–C2H6 and NO–CH4 vibrational predissociation, in which substantial differences are observed in the energy exchange mechanisms during the evolution of the collision complexes to products. NO-CH4 experiences JT dynamics, while NO–C2H6 is pseudo JT.

Churchill performed Honors Thesis research, using interface-specific IR spectroscopy to study the intermolecular interactions of nitrophenol chromophores at charged water/oil surfaces. Churchill will be a post-bacc researcher in our group before starting his permanent position.

Garrett carried out Senior Thesis work, revealing the inelastic scattering mechanisms from bimolecular collisions of nitric oxide (NO) and increasingly-larger alkane partners. Garrett's MS work will center on studying chemical transformation mechanisms from reactive collisions.
