Minnie, our Border Collie, had terminal cancer in 2024. Minnie was 'my' dog, she followed me everywhere since she was a pup. We could read each other's minds it seemed. I decided that when she couldn't get up for 24h, or did not eat for 48h, it would be time. One morning it was time. I made her bacon & eggs, and she ate just a taste and laid back down. But when I grabbed the leash, she struggled and got up on her feet. When I led her into the garage, she realized we were going to the vet, and she loved going to the vet. So now she was full of energy. Do I go? Damn. She was happy and looked healthy as we were waiting for the vet. I felt terrible, but she had been suffering almost daily for over a month, and had not gotten up or eaten for 2 days. I held her as she was shaved, and had the IV put in. Her head was in my lap as I sat on the floor with her, as the vet pushed the drugs into her IV. She finally made a gasping noise and it was over. I was a wreck, I felt I had betrayed her. I have a wall plaque with her picture and her collar where we hang leashes. I still tear up when I think of her last day.
