The kids who come to college used to being motivated by mom, dad, or coach often don’t make it. That motivation works in the short term, but it quickly fades. To be successful over the long haul, we all need motivation that comes from deep within.

Mastery is playing the long game. It's judging yourself not by comparison to others, but by progress and effort. It's understanding that every failure is data. Don't define yourself by any single moment. Define yourself by an entire body of work in service of ongoing growth.

Commitment isn’t a feeling. It’s a standard. Average effort gets average results. Bring urgency. Bring standards. Because “almost” doesn’t build anything worth keeping. If you want it, earn it.

The hardest part of my morning run is often just getting out the door. Once you're out the door, the rest often takes care of itself. Just get going. Take the first step.

When I started running, I asked my coach how to get better. He said: show up to every practice I got better. I asked again: "Run on the weekends when we don't practice" I got better Showing up consistently is step 1 in any pursuit Don't overcomplicate it when getting going

“You can have different personalities, but you can’t have different mentalities…”   We don’t need everybody to be the same person. We need everybody to buy into the same standard. Culture isn’t a speech—it’s habits. It’s accountability.

The 5 Rules of Training: 1. The boring stuff is your foundation 2. Let it Come, Don’t Force it. 3. Take the Next Logical Step 4. You lose what you don’t train 5. Train the individual, not the system scienceofrunning.com/2020/05/the-5-…

“Soft loses every day. If a kid really wants to be good, he’ll respect you a lot more if you’re hard. There’s a way to be hard without being degrading. I don’t think you can ever let your kids settle, ever,” Bill Self Comfort doesn’t build winners but standards do.

Every coach has seen it... talented athletes who never last. Not because of skill, but because they aren’t coachable. Athletes who listen, accept feedback, and stay accountable? They win. They last. They grow. Talent fades. Coachability doesn’t.

The truth about progress: Big heroic efforts get applause, but boring consistency gets results. Anyone can crush it for a day. What’s truly hard is showing up day after day, week after week, when no one’s watching. Consistency is the real superpower.
