Big opinion incoming: recording and submitting a high volume of auditions in one sitting is not a badge of honor. The show of some redonkulous double digit you recorded today is not worthy to me of any kind of bragging right. It doesn’t make you better at what you do. Rather, to me, it shows a flippant lack of commitment and investment in your roles, and reeks of “pick me” desperation in pursuit of a number, rather than the pursuit of exploring, growing, and challenging yourself in the art. It also tells me you probably don’t care enough to be selective in what you’ll read for…which is fine; but then, honestly, if you don’t care, why should I? I say all this, not to be harsh, not to shame anyone, but to wake you up. It’s sorely needed; Too many young VAs I’ve encountered are not only cheating themselves out of the learning that can come with the auditioning process, but often are burning themselves out, or spiraling into cycles of depression over some fool’s errand - either chasing some arbitrary number, percentage, approval or the win of selection. I hear it every day. I’m here to tell you, it’s not about volume. Step back, take your time, be selective, and above all, care for and be present in your roles. There a tons of slick ads out there affirming that anyone can be a “voice actor”…I truly hope, in the end, you’ll make the conscious effort to be a good one ☝️

@swannsvoice More the second one. The line makes sense, I have an idea in my head of what I’m trying to go for, but when I actually record, I can’t pull it off.

Question for other voice actors: what do you do when you’re recording an audition and a line just isn’t clicking? You try multiple times and it just doesn’t land right. How do you work through it? I leave and come back later but I’d love to hear other (less time-consuming) ideas

Quick spiel because this is something that’s honestly bothered me since starting my voice acting career 😤 This situation reminds me a lot of music. Sometimes an artist experiments with a different sound because they enjoy creating and exploring new sides of their craft. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea ☕️ and that’s completely fine but that doesn’t mean the artist deserves hate for it. Voice acting works the same way. Trying different tones, energies, and character types is literally part of the job. Something being playful, flirtatious, dramatic, dark, silly, or exaggerated doesn’t suddenly define who someone is as a person. It’s acting! I actually thought the dub sounded great! And as a fellow VA, it’s genuinely encouraging to see other creators explore different sides of their range. A lot of us already feel nervous about stepping outside the box people expect us to stay in 🫠 What’s frustrating is how comfortable the internet has made people with tearing creators down. It’s easy to say whatever you want when there’s a screen between you and the person you’re talking about. Something I learned from childhood: if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all and honestly that advice still holds up. Not everything has to be for everyone and that’s okay. But artists experimenting with their craft shouldn’t be something people get attacked for. Keep doing you Meggie!! It sounded awesome👏 😍✨
