I lived in north-central California for years. I maintained a second apartment on the central coast. The one on the coast ran 2.5x the rent of my larger primary residence. I moved to Montana. took on a job that paid less, and had MORE money in the black every month, and STILL maintain an apartment on the central California coast. When people like ME (and I am NOT "MAGA", or even terribly right wing except to the far leftists) say "act your wage" we are talking to the ones who want the newest phones, nicest cars, bayside apartments, nights "out", multiple entertainment subscriptions, eating out REGULARLY, and do NOT want to put in the work to get the kind of job that ALLOWS that. Minimum wage should pay for a MINIMUM existence; base rent (not your own personal condo with included gyms and dog parks), utilities and basic food. EVERYTHING else is extra, and as one SHOULD expect, extra benefits take extra work. Additionally, most of the posts you see about "minimum wage" use GROSSLY exaggerated numbers, and STILL show the flaws in the chosen lifestyles.

"Live within your means" assumes the means were set fairly to begin with.
In 1970, the average American CEO made about 20 times what their average worker made. Today that ratio is over 300 to 1.
Worker productivity has risen steadily for fifty years. Wages, adjusted for inflation, have barely moved.
The means did not stagnate because workers stopped living within them.
The means stagnated because the people setting compensation decided where the productivity gains would go, and they decided they would go up, not down.
You're telling people to budget their way out of a structural redistribution that has been happening above their heads for half a century.
