Now that aliens are being discussed, some random facts:
- The Catholic Church has a Bishop of the Moon. It’s Bishop John Noonan of the Diocese of Orlando, FL, which due to a technicality in Canon Law, and the fact that Apollo 11 departed from Florida, includes the Moon as its ecclesiastical jurisdiction.
- The Catholic Church is open to the possibility of intelligent life beyond Earth. Believing in aliens does not conflict with doctrine. Fr. José Funes published in 2008 that excluding aliens would put “limits on God’s creative freedom”. Pope Francis in 2014 said that if an alien asked for baptism, he should not be denied emphasizing that “the Holy Spirit blows where it wills”. Fr. Guy Consolmagno, Director of the Vatican Observatory says that any entity with a soul, even if otherworldly, is a candidate for a relationship with God.
- In summary, the Catholic Church leaves the question about the existence of aliens open and on the purview of scientific fact only. The existence of aliens would not ge in contradiction with doctrine, and if aliens were found to exist, it would be the position of the Church to try and baptize them and save their soul for Jesus. All this while having a Bishop for the Moon.
