Everyone's arguing CLOBs vs RFQ like it's Coke vs Pepsi But one serves retail crypto ($20T market) The other unlocks institutional TradFi ($600T OTC market) They're not even playing the same game, and the gap is wider than anyone realizes A 🧵:

Now that the word is out and RWA’s are officially coming to Variational in the next few weeks, it’s time for another article. Understanding Variational #3 the endgame.

Variational's model will be the first to achieve the "trade everything" promise the entire fintech space has been converging towards for decades. Time to show everyone what that looks like this Summer.

Every new RWA market on an on-chain orderbook has to bootstrap liquidity from scratch. One asset at a time. One incentive program at a time. One limited puddle of crypto-native depth at a time. Meanwhile, the dealers and venues that power the underlying TradFi markets are sitting on trillion-dollar liquidity oceans built over decades. The venue that wins RWA perps will be the one that connects to the deepest existing liquidity in the world, enabling thousands of listings with high quality execution. We’ve been building this model at Variational since the beginning. Phase 1 of our RWA rollout launches in May. Variational Summer.

Variational just announced their RWA rollout in three phases. Phase 1 launches in May with US500, oil, gold, silver, and indices, all cross-margined with crypto perps, 50x leverage, 0% fees, and 24/7 trading. Phase 2 follows roughly a month later with 23/5 CFDs routed through tier-1 non-bank market makers, opening up hundreds of single-name equities, FX pairs, and commodities. Phase 3 is universal coverage in Q3 and beyond, with Korean and Japanese stocks, Hong Kong and Australian markets, and prediction products built on top of multi-dealer 24/7 cross-margined infrastructure. @variational_io This is one of the core reasons I've stayed bullish on Variational throughout. TradFi moves more than $30T a year in derivatives on stocks, commodities, and currencies, while on-chain perps capture less than 0.01% of it. CLOBs were never going to close that gap because they have to bootstrap depth market by market. Variational's brokerage-like model aggregates liquidity from dealers who already power the underlying markets, which means new markets ship at the speed of software instead of being rebuilt from scratch. That's a structural advantage, not a marketing line. If even a small share of that $30T flows on-chain through this architecture, Variational is positioned to absorb a meaningful piece of it. That's not a thesis built on hope. It's built on the fact that the team has been pointing at this exact problem since day one, and is now shipping the solution in public. Viva la Variational. The ultimate perp-dex marketplace One account, one UI, everything tradeable on-chain Still doesn’t exist with real execution, especially for perps across global RWAs. First platform that gets there wins Place your bets accordingly: omni.variational.io/?ref=OMNIMIGHTY
LVS@variational_lvs

Every durable retail platform of the last decade has converged on the same product direction: a single account, a single UI, and the broadest possible asset menu with the deepest available liquidity. IB's "universal broker" positioning across 150+ markets drives ~25% YoY account growth. eToro sells itself on equities, crypto, ETFs, CFDs in one app. SoFi members using 2+ products retain and monetize materially better. Hyperliquid's own move from perps-only into spot, HIP-3 RWA markets, and a superapp direction tracks the same pattern. What no venue (especially on-chain) offers today is that consolidation with high-quality execution in perpetual futures across every RWA the user wants to trade. Traders juggle a Korean broker for KRX names, Robinhood or IBKR for US equities, an FX platform for currencies, a CFD provider for indices, and a crypto exchange for perps--each with its own balance, margin, tax, and UX. The first venue that delivers tight, stable execution across equities, global indices, commodities, FX, and regional single-names **as perpetuals, in one account, 24/7** will capture a massive increase in demand. Not because retail doesn't know what they want, but because until now no one could make the long tail liquid. More to come about the Variational Vision and our three-stage rollout for RWA markets.

An easy mental model is that if Hyperliquid is decentralized NASDAQ, then Variational is decentralized Robinhood

Fact check: false 1. Variational is decentralized because all user collateral is stored in a segregated collateral account per user onchain. OLP puts *its own funds* up for collateral on CEXes. This means if binance is hacked user collateral is not lost. 2. We use a broker model but there is no separate A book vs B book. All trades go into one global portfolio for hedging. For hedging we do use binance as one liquidity source, as well as other exchanges. This is why we are able to aggregate liquidity and provide much better liquidity and lower costs than other DEXes. 3. We have routed flow to hyperliquid before, and are open to doing so in the future too. We see ourselves as complementary to all exchanges in the space, and we have a grow the pie mindset. This will be especially powerful with our RWA launch as we will aggregate across tradfi liquidity sources as well.
Flood@ThinkingUSD

Calling Drift a "decentralized exchange" was always funny to me. They used a Binance account much like Variational to just B-Book all the client trades and hedge it out on Binance Perps.

+$400 in rPNL using the gold delta-neutral strategy. If you're skipping perp DEX airdrops because you're a bad trader, this strategy leaves you with no excuse. More profit. Less risk.

my key takeaways as host new hires: -the team is growing w/new engineers + bd (17 total) -new hires are 'high performers' (former jane st. etc) -team are 'very selective' about who they hire -plenty of runway despite team growth updates/rwas: -next major update will address common feedback -rwas en route, 25-40 initially, infinitely more coming -expect to offer more rwa listings than anyone else -omni to resolve prohibitive funding rates for rwas -variational's approach will be 'new and unique' olp: -olp can bridge liquidity to/from other venues -think of olp as a 'liquidity hub for perps' -(you are not bullish enough on what olp can do) -olp can be much more efficient over time -spreads to tighten further going forward -omni already one of the cheapest venues variational ethos: -'want to be more of a fintech app on crypto rails' -team laser focused on 'iterative improvements' to var growth vs. treasury: -seeing ~200k per day in spreads paid per day -50% goes to hedging costs (this will improve) -the rest is split between different buckets -5%: refs, 10%: refunds, 10%: treasury, 25%: olp -'still figuring out optimal ratios' -'growth is the main priority rn' (growth mode) -closer to tge, will focus more on treasury/revenue -transparency dashboards to come -post tge, will have a stats page for buybacks etc. -'strong treasury & token help with growth' on feedback: -'taking notes on what has/hasn't worked' -the var team wants open/honest feedback -committed to being transparent/listening to users -wants to create a best in class product on ai/llms: -the team uses ai/llms for efficiency in a few domains -re: speed concerns, expect productivity to ramp up can't cover everything here. listen back to the whole thing below was an excellent space gvar

Benefits of farming only few projects: 1. All resources goes into highest conviction play. Concentrated bets is how to make money, diversification is how to keep it. 2. People trust you more with next porject. This is how I menaged to get 600m + reffered volume on Variational despite being account with 2k follow. 3. Knowing points formula well. Farming same projects every week decrease amount of mistakes and helps optimise cost of farming. Be early first. Stay with winners later. Extended. Variational.

Thoughts on Variational co-founders @mr_plumpkin & @variational_lvs spaces: 1. Spaces recap: - RWAs are highest priority. Other high priority is new v3 UI, logging in with email + easier deposits, mobile app, OLP deposits. - 15 employees now, will grow to 20 pretty soon. - Significant frontend update coming fast (v3 UI), mobile app later. - RWAs are aiming to launch Q1. (About 10 markets on day one, 50-100 range for the future). - Participation in OLP will be gated (tiers, activity, etc...). - PRO was a topic. Backend is ready, not highest priority right now. - Some announcement coming alongside RWAs (community focus announcent I suppose). 2. My understanding of founders plan: - Ship RWAs to bring more liquidity on OMNI. It differentiatiates product from others, price discovery may happen on OMNI when market is closed what may bring big volumes. PMF is there and RFQ is best system to do it onchain, this is why it is highest priority. (late march timeline) - Experiment with spread to make it as low as possible while having sustainable business model. (make trading as cheap as possible for retail users). - New UI, easier onboarding by logging in with email + deposits from bank account and mobile app. Make experience better and onboard more retail traders / liquidity. (Q2 timeline) - Open OLP deposits, but make it gated to reward real community memebers with high APR. (Q2 timeline). - Start working on realising PRO just before TGE to give people something to speculate about and wait for. 3. My conclusion and strategy: I feel like team likes to not promis much and overdeliver. The RWAs and announcement that comes alongside it will drive next wave of adoption. The last wave will be PRO. Strategy is to farm every week until RWAs launch and platform gets more crowded again. Spaces are 50 minutes long and worth watching.
