I live in LA and there are people sleeping in their own beds tonight instead of a detention center not because of cardboard protest signs but because a few folks lobbed rocks at ICE vehicles until they shit their pants and ran away

derek is welcome to tweet me to death for saying this but the thing you gotta remember when referring to Dr. King’s words and example re: non-violent protest is they still murdered him for it.

I admire the courage of people protesting the ICE raids in California. I'm against violent protests and think they're counterproductive. I also think that non-violent protests send a more powerful and enduring message. Have long believed in Dr. King's message about using non-violent resistance. That said, I also hope everyone protesting stays safe. This is a long struggle, and there are many ways to support immigrants beyond what's happening right now in the streets. You can volunteer with pro-immigrant organizations, offer material aid, or even pursue a career in immigration law. I share your anger and believe we can channel this energy into something that makes meaningful change for immigrants. But to do that, you have to stay safe.

We must find a positive form if action: first learn, read, understand more so you can teach others. Decolonisation, liberation, justice begin with learning. Read the colonised. Learn from the colonised. That is who keep hope alive despite the coloniser’s violence.

Hennepin County announced an overdose spike alert and it coincides with the eviction of the large encampment that took place on Cedar earlier this week. The overdoses were concentrated in South Minneapolis. 1/

The #1 group becoming homeless for the first time is the elderly.
This is WITH Social Security, which doesn't even pay for a 1bd apt. in most of the US.
Getting rid of that program that people have paid into their whole lives would be death for the poorest elderly ppl.

LA was still conducting sweeps while it was pouring rain yesterday.
I can't fathom how people who take tents and blankets from people during a storm sleep at night.

It's pouring rain in LA - so bad that people's tents are collapsing. In a healthy society, there would be warming centers every couple blocks, with vans driving around taking people there, but instead, there is nothing.
Just volunteers giving out tarp and tents until we run out.

Fremont CA has passed a measure banning homeless people from existing in public - they'll face citation and jail.
They also have criminalized anyone HELPING people living in these camps.
We're headed down a dark road where helping your unhoused neighbors is prohibited.
