After years of punishing high earners with some of the steepest taxes in the nation, the people footing the bill have fled to Florida and Texas, states where the governor isn't shaking them down every April. So what's the solution? Apparently, begging. This isn't a new story. History is littered with governments who learned this the hard way. France's 75% supertax sent millionaires and Gérard Depardieu straight to Belgium. Sweden taxed IKEA's founder all the way to Switzerland. Britain hit 83% and watched the Rolling Stones record an album in France. Every single time, the result was the same. The wealthy left, and the tax raised almost nothing. Because here's the fundamental problem with taxing high earners. You're punishing people for excelling. At some point the message becomes clear: don't succeed here. So they don't. They leave. New York didn't just lose tax revenue. It lost the people who generate it. Turns out, you can't spend money you chased away.
