Ghana's stock market had a dramatic day today. Eight companies gained in value, four dropped, and two hit the maximum loss allowed in a single day, meaning trading in BOPP and ACCESS was effectively stopped after their prices fell 10% each. The overall market index (think of it as the score for all listed companies combined) rose by just over 1% to close at 13,667 points. That brings the year-to-date gain to a remarkable 56%, meaning someone who invested at the start of 2026 has seen their portfolio grow by more than half in cedi terms. GCB Bank was the star of the day, jumping nearly 8% in a single session. Clydestone also had a strong day, gaining 9%. MTN Ghana dominated trading activity, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all money that changed hands today, with over GH¢4.6 million worth of its shares bought and sold. MTNGH and SOGEGH accounted for 77% of total market turnover On the broader economy, inflation cooled slightly to 3.2% in March, the cedi held steady against the dollar at GH¢11.68, and short-term government borrowing rates ticked up slightly. In 1994, exports of kente and other Ghanaian traditional textiles contributed approximately $179.7 million to Ghana's GDP. By 2011, revenue from Ghana's textile industry had fallen to about $53.5 million, approximately 30% less than in 1994 largely due to the upsurge in mass production and copying of Kente by China. In September 2025, Ghana gained Geographical Indication (GI) status for Kente, meaning only cloths woven using traditional techniques in approved Ghanaian communities are now legally allowed to use the name. It's a long-overdue protection, but enforcement, especially in the chaos of Makola, is another matter entirely.
