We're taking proactive measures at Hills Creek Dam to protect nearby communities from risks associated with earthquakes. This recreation season, we'll be lowering the reservoir's water level by about 30 feet.

We responded by: -- holding back water at our dams to reduce flooding downstream -- constructing a miniature levee to protect downtown Portland -- placing sandbags in communities across the region -- repairing dikes, levees, and flood protection embankments

Me to our engineers: “Hey, I was thinking we do some kind of football post ahead of the Super Bowl. Any ideas?” *long, awkward silence* Engineer: “The technical shape name for a football is a prolate spheroid.” Me: "OK, maybe we just stay away from sports."

The Columbia River Gorge is a prime winter location for migrating eagles due to the abundance of food found along the Columbia River. It's typical to see dozens of eagles from the visitor center parking lot and adjacent Seufert Park, which are both open to the public daily.

It's always our very strong expert opinion, as those who built and maintain the jetties along the coast of Oregon (and one in southern Washington), that you avoid jetties pretty much any time. Rough conditions or high waves are ideal times to heed our advice.

The water levels in our flood storage reservoirs across the valley are very low (as they are every fall/winter per our annual elevation guide), so we have plenty of space to hold back inflows from these rain events in the coming days.
