It’s not really that simple. Goth didn’t start as a reaction to the Satanic Panic.... it was already around before that. The panic mostly just lumped goth in with other “scary” alternative stuff and reinforced the outsider image. Conservative groups definitely played a big role, but it wasn’t only political either. mainstream media and even schools pushed it too. So it’s less “goth = counterculture to right-wing panic” and more that it already existed and then got caught up in all of it. 😅

Goth has always leaned toward individuality, not punching down at marginalized groups. That’s the disconnect i was pointing out.

Goth came from post-punk a music and art subculture, not a political ideology. It’s always been anti-authoritarian in tone, but never unified under one side. Historically, goth scenes have had people across the spectrum, so saying it’s strictly “pro-social liberalism” just isn’t accurate. It’s primarily a music- and art-driven subculture.
