A new global study led by a @umich researcher found that people worldwide—when choosing among their five senses—agree that sight and hearing are the most useful senses, followed by touch, smell and taste. @um_psychology news.umich.edu/to-suss-out-wh…

This one was a journey. Jobs changed, roles changed, zip codes changed, babies were born, but the meta-analysis kept going. Grateful to the brilliant team (most not on X). who made it happen. @StewartColes @RCGD_ISR @ucsantabarbara @CommUcsb @mediamosaiclab

@niba_saleem and colleagues’ meta-analysis reveals that negative media depictions of ethnic minorities lead to unfavorable evaluations of these groups, while positive portrayals produce the opposite effect.

As a researcher of inequality, I've been faced with the conundrum of how to talk about the harms of inequality but in a way that isn't only deficit focused, which can perpetuate the stigma that inequality creates. I'm grateful to have these suggestions by @ChristinaBauerA!
Christina Bauer@ChristinaBauerA

news! 🚨👀Social inequality research can sometimes inadvertently stigmatise disadvantaged groups as weak, lacking in agency, motivation, or skills. In our new review, we highlight how we can come to a more accurate and non-stigmatizing study of inequality. compass.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/…

"To bridge divides, we often think facts are the key. But that’s wrong. In our studies, we asked a representative sample of Americans what would make them respect a political opponent during a conversation. Their answer? Facts. They thought discussing raw data would keep everyone rational, and rational people are easier to respect. But when we gave people facts, they called them “fake facts.” Facts from the other side feel like propaganda, not bridges. So how do we bridge divides? The best way is through stories—especially stories about harm. Sharing personal stories of suffering helps people on the other side see that you care about protecting the vulnerable, just like they do. These stories create understanding and open the door to better conversations." We had a fascinating interview with @kurtjgray about his new book "Outraged: Why We Fight About Morality and Politics and How to Find Common Ground" His book is out today and you can read our in depth interview for a sneak peak here: powerofusnewsletter.com/p/outraged-why…

Thank you to our speakers and staff who made our fall @RCGD_ISR speaker series a success! Each of the talks answered the questions of what makes systemic racism systemic, and how structural elements of race can be represented in our discipline.

Unmarried African American friends are more likely than white Americans to form family-like relationships, or surrogate families, where they take care of each other’s needs, says Robert Taylor, professor of social work @UMSocialWork: “In general, women are closer to their friends than men and there are some differences in terms of friendship contact." via @WEMU891: wemu.org/wemu-news/2024…
