In honor of Women's History Month, we'll be celebrating several pioneering women of South Carolina who challenged systems in order to advance a more equitable state for all people. Stay tuned as we share inspiration stories of impact from these incredible figures!

📣Black History | Robert Smalls (1839–1915) | Beaufort. Born enslaved, Smalls seized freedom by commandeering a Confederate ship in 1862. During Reconstruction, he helped rewrite SC's constitution and served in the U.S. Congress, advancing public education and voting rights.

📣 Black History Month: Lucille Simmons Whipper (1928–2021) of Charleston broke barriers statewide! In 1972, she became College of Charleston’s first Black administrator; in 1985, the first Black woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives.

📣 Black History Month | Modjeska Monteith Simkins For 50+ years, she fought inequality in SC. A teacher and public health worker, she became a key National Association for the Advancement of Colored People leader, challenging segregated schools and health care!
