Casper Ruud holds serve more often than Sampras did on hard courts in 1994 & Davidovich Fokina holds serve more often than Ivanišević. 94' Sampras would be outside the top 10 for holds in 2026 among Top 50, Ivanišević 30th/50 84% of current Top 50 hold serve >80% vs 44% in 1994

1 - Since the format's introduction in 1990, only David Goffin and Alex De Minaur (0 each) have conceded fewer games en route to victory over an ATP Masters 1000 champion than Arthur Fils, who conceded one game to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Demolition. #MiamiOpen | @MiamiOpen @atptour

Imagine saying in February that Talia Gibson would win 11 (and counting!) matches at the Sunshine Double and Carlos Alcaraz would only win 5.

@tennisabstract If his opponents - like Alcaraz - say that he is way more agressive now, i believe them. More than any charts.

All this talk about Medvedev's newfound aggression, take a look at the Aggression Scores from charting data, based on % of shots that end the point (for good or bad). 0 is average, Medvedev is -57 over the last 52 weeks, almost the least aggressive on tour. Indian Wells was ... mostly the same.

@One_Der0 Madueke's header at Brentford came after a throw-in that travelled far enough to qualify as a 'long throw' according to our definition (see article)

76 % Swiatek ? Elina: Auckland champion, AO semifinalist, Dubai finalist, 3rd in Race Ranking Iga: AO: QF, 0 top 10 wins, first top 30 win: yesterday, barely 10th in Race Ranking. I know it’s Iga, but 76% ? I’m confused.
Tennis Updates@TennisUpdates26

Elina Svitolina will take on Iga Swiatek in IW QF Iga has definitely played with more margin this week than she has recently and its worked well, this is another matchup that we've seen too much of to believe that Iga will be tested that much even though Elina has played well.

What an effort from Draper. Choked badly serving it out but level from 4-4 in the 2nd in particular was outstanding. Serving, ball striking, defence and physicality all through the roof. Encouraging that he and Fills have returned to such high levels after their long layoffs.

@mattracquet I saw that and did wonder if maybe that was early signs of the elbow issue that plagued him from the end of the season into 2017. I’d be interested to see 2015 or earlier data. Still, says a lot he could dominate that tournament with that serve speed.

Djokovic having such a long career is a great window into how the game has changed. A 112mph avg first serve speed is basically unheard of in the top 10 in 2026

@TennisMyLife68 What matches for McEnroe does the tennis abstract database (and seemingly the ATP) include that aren't included in yours? I'm guessing maybe the Masters Cup played in January could be considered the previous season? tennisabstract.com/cgi-bin/player…

the year is 2070. wimbledon and roland garros have long been resurfaced. the tour is now 96 medium fast hard court events with a 48 hour off season. a child asks their father what grass smells like and what the opposite of topspin is. he doesn’t remember

It's fairly obvious that taller players have an easier time hitting accurate serves (closer to centre/side line) but wasn't expecting quite such a stark grouping difference. Elite sub 6ft2 (188cm) spot servers don't seem to exist at the moment, most shorter guys favouring power

It's simply a fact that it's incredibly unlikely that the five greatest outliers in tennis history are all people that have played slam matches in the last 5 years. Not impossible of course, but unlikely. If you take it as fact you need arguments as to why.

This is assuming your attempt at measuring the 'greatest of all time' is based on how players did against their peers, i.e. the true way of assessing it, rather than evaluating who would win in a modern day clash between them, which is always going to be the recent player.
