Good news! 🎆 The Google Play accepted our appeal and approved the latest build. Smart Launcher 6.6 is now available in open beta on Google Play. We plan to roll out 6.6 to production soon, after we fix a few known bugs that are still under review.

@MarcusBremen You can. Access preferences, Global appearance, then tap "Edit theme". There, you can change the background color in the panel tab.

i went ahead and took the plunge buying @SmartLauncher as the best @NovaLauncher alternative since that's no longer being developed. my main issue is smart launcher I don't think has an infinite widget & icon scroll which I wish got implemented in some way.
