‘But Nowruz is also celebrated by many Sunnis’, is a typical talking point of Nowruz apologists that some well-meaning Muslim have picked up unconsciously. The reality is far more nuanced, and I have explained this many times before. There is a big difference between Nowruz in Shi'ism and the Nowruz found among some Sunni laymen. In Shi'ism, Nowruz is literally sanctified, treated as sacred, and even attributed to the Ahl al-Bayt in their Majoosi-influenced distortion of them (twelfth Persianised Emoms). That is exactly why Nowruz, which they openly call an Eid, by far bigger than the actual Islamic Eids of al-Fitr and al-Adha in Iran. Even practising Shia there venerate it. As for Sunnis in Iran, religious Sunnis like the Baloch, who are very similar to Pashtuns, do not have Nowruz in their culture at all, and neither do other practising Sunni groups (religious Sunnis in Iran don't celebrate Nowruz, not even Persian Sunnis). The only so-called Sunnis in Iran who celebrate Nowruz are liberal and secular ones, and even they do not attribute it to Islam. As for Tajik Persians, Sunni Tajiks in Afghanistan, it is mainly liberal elements who observe it, and even they do not celebrate it anywhere near the level seen in Iran. There are no fire-jumping rituals in Afghanistan but they are everywhere in Iran, including Qom.and Mashhad, their holiest cities. On the contrary, there are many Tajik and Afghan scholars who quote standard Hanafi texts warning against Majoosi Nowruz, and the Hanafi school is among the strictest regarding this issue. As for Uzbeks, Kazakhs, and others you mentioned, they are influenced by Persianate culture, both its good and its falsehood. Nowruz among them is celebrated by the ignorant and liberal masses, not by their practising and knowledgeable people. So what you need to understand is this: among actual Muslims, meaning Ahl al-Sunnah, Nowruz is only found among those influenced by remnants of Majoosi culture. In Shi'ism, however, the Twelver clerical establishment actively goes out of its way to sanctify it. That is why it has effectively become the main ‘Eid’ in Iran, while Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha have little to no real significance in their culture.
