I don't post much on Twitter anymore, but a bit of math for @Elonmusk seems worth breaking my diet. Musk’s lack of math skills is making me nervous wapo.st/4cH7UYY

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. A third of children are stunted due to malnutrition. The ag minister declares that GMOs have "health risks" and everyone should eat organic. This is the damage that anti-science misinformation does. malawifreedomnetwork.com/2024/10/31/mal…

It's completely understandable that the Emissions Gap media headlines focus on the bad news: if current policies continue we're looking at a catastrophic 3.1C warming. That means curtains for rainforests, coral, ice caps, unliveable conditions in tropics, superstorms etc. But...

...it's not the most likely outcome, not even close. Current policies won't continue. We're not going to be emitting today's CO2 levels in 2050, which is what drives the 3.1C outcome. As the IEA says, the clean energy transition is fully underway and likely unstoppable. So...

we need to look not at the top of this figure, but the bottom of it - conditional NDCs and all net zero pledges. Are we going to meet net zero? Maybe! So long as we ignore the naysayers trying to block renewables, grid upgrades, nuclear, EVs etc. Warming then is 1.9C not 3.1C.

And could be as low as 1.6 if we're lucky and smart. Yes 1.5C is out of the picture in any realistic scenario. But there is so much left to still fight for, and the fight is only just beginning. Deliver net zero in every country 2050-ish and we've still got a planet to enjoy!

Cultivated meat. It could end factory farming. It could rewild the planet. It could save the climate. But it could also be about to be banned. Yes, banned, as in made illegal. That's why we need your help, together we can build a grassroots movement in defence of cultivated meat. act.weplanet.org/cultivated-mea… We know, it sounds crazy! But this is what's already happening. Starting in Italy in 2023, the Meloni government brought in a law criminalising the production or selling cultivated meat. Now 12 other European countries are considering passing bans and there is even talk of a European wide ban. In the US, the state of Florida has placed a ban on cultivated meat and several other states look to follow. This critically important sustainable food industry is under immense pressure from the livestock industry and reactionary politicians who want to squash it before it's even truly gotten started. That's why we need your help, together we can build a grassroots movement in defence of cultivated meat. act.weplanet.org/cultivated-mea…
