This Wednesday's Welldoing.org #CPD is with #therapist @crossmansusanna , author of Home is Where We Start: Growing up in the fallout of the utopian dream @FigTreePenguin . It's an absorbing read, describing the freedom of a 1970s commune childhood, but also exposing the dangers that lurk when kids are exposed to adult politics and sexuality. So much of what was seen as liberating and revolutionary in that period has turned out to have been predatory and exploitative. What happened to the children who grew up without the usual rules and regulations? And what is the effect on family relationships? Our members can join any of our CPDs for free but if you are not a member, we welcome you to book via Eventbrite lnkd.in/eXpAwCfP #csa #therapy #therapists #therapyCPD

We think #therapist and authorTom Davies is on to something when he writes: "What if our modern obsession with #identity and self-improvement is actually hurting rather than helping our psychological wellbeing? And what can we do to truly alleviate our suffering?" Our therapists can see him on our Thursday 1pm CPD, but we welcome other practitioners via Eventbrite eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-our-need…

Tomorrow's Welldoing.org #CPD is with psychoanalytic psychotherapist Juliet Rosenfeld, author of this spring's must-read Affairs: True Stores of Love, Lies, Hope and Desire. What leads men and women to risk their reputations and family life for a forbidden liaison? Is it mostly about a toxic mix of lust and boredom, or does infidelity often come down to early events in these individual's lives, featuring absent fathers, over-protective mothers, and the rest? Our hashtag #therapist members can register for Wednesday's 1pm online event via their accounts, but we also welcome practitioners via Eventbrite booking lnkd.in/ekNedh7h We'd love you to join us for what should be a fascinating session.

At a book group attended by @AShulman2, Sally Rooney's Intermezzo was being discussed. About the relationship between two brothers and the women in their lives, the book delves into the thorny question of commitment. "As we debated the pros and cons of throuples, one of my friends – the founder of mental health hub Welldoing.org – informed us that 'consensual non-monogamy' is currently a big issue in her field," she wrote in @DailyMailUK. "We all looked baffled. Of course we all knew about free love, open marriages and people generally exploring sex outside a relationship. But we hadn't heard of this strange new term. "No wonder younger people find the whole dating scene a minefield, with its vast vocabulary to describe every possible type and style of relationship. I've only just got my head around 'situationship' (a casual relationship) and now there's a whole other category to deal with. "It doesn't sound like much fun. We all agreed it's become clear by our stage of life that open relationships generally lead to unhappiness and confusion. Calling it 'consensual non-monogamy' and formalising the idea of having your cake and eating it – sexually speaking – won't make much difference. But I guess we have to let the younger crew learn that for themselves."

There has been lots of talk about overdiagnosis of such conditions as #ADHD and #ASD, with no fewer than three books published in the last two months. @AliceMcGurran wrote a great post on the subject -- here's a clip from her interview with Dr Suzanne O'Sullivan in which she explains why it might be a problem. welldoing.org/article/book-o…

What one of our #therapists Camilla Nicholls thinks of #Adolescence: "When a still ranting Jamie leaves the interview room the psychiatrist is left with all his evacuated feelings of anger, frustration, disappointment and shame. I think most #therapists will relate to this scene acutely. We may not have worked with child murderers but many of us will regularly come into contact with murderous feelings from which our clients wish to be relieved in treatment. On watching I felt nauseous, sweaty and despairing. "#Adolescence holds a very uncomfortable mirror up to our current sense of social cohesion and community. Rarely are we served such rich, timely and essential dramatic fare." welldoing.org/article/what-a…
