Big news! Alberta is on the verge of a major shift with Bill 18, a new law that will not only slow the expansion of euthanasia but it will begin to push back by adding stronger safeguards. The bill introduces stricter eligibility rules, tighter approval processes, family involvement, protections for doctors and facilities who opt out, limits on how MAID is promoted, and serious professional accountability, all while keeping it legal. Overall, it aims to better protect vulnerable patients, respect conscience rights, and ensure more careful oversight. Guidance, Not Isolation. When a young woman faces an unexpected pregnancy, the support of her family is often the most important resource she can have. Yet in Alberta, parental consent is not required for a minor to obtain an abortion, despite it being a significant medical decision. Encouraging secrecy in such circumstances can create unnecessary distance between parents and their children, at a time when support and guidance are most needed. We believe that when a minor seeks an abortion, parents should, at the very least, be informed.
