When one thing leads to another: 3 arrested by bike patrol officers on sex offender, drug warrants in Virginia FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Three people were arrested on outstanding warrants during a police patrol in Hybla Valley, Virginia, according to the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD). Officers said they were doing a bike patrol around 5:12 p.m. on March 14 in the 7900 block of Janna Lee Avenue when they spotted two people they recognized as wanted suspects. Police said Catherine Harris, 26, and Darias Smith, 30, both listed as having no fixed address, were stopped. Officers determined Smith also had an outstanding warrant from the Virginia State Police. While officers were making those arrests, they saw a third person, Idris Mussa, 33, of Alexandria, who was also wanted. After a brief foot chase, he was taken into custody. Harris faces a charge of possession of Schedule I/II drugs and was served warrants, including three misdemeanor failures to appear and one felony failure to appear. She was held on a $1,000 secured bond. Smith was served a felony warrant for sex offender registration violation and held without bond. Mussa faces possession of Schedule I/II drugs and obstruction of justice charges, along with warrants for five counts of petit larceny, two counts of violating conditions of release, and two counts of trespassing. He was held without bond.

The driver at the center of the incident, Thomas Rodriguez, says the situation started with a passenger who wasn’t even supposed to be in the car. “This guy just decided to come with my car and sit in my car and start demanding me to drive him,” Rodriguez said. Video that Rodriguez’s cameras inside the vehicle captured on March 22 shows the unwanted passenger stepping into the vehicle and asking that Rodriguez take him home. Seattle: Man shoving a passenger as a light rail train approaches at the Northgate station SEATTLE — A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after prosecutors say he tried to push a stranger in front of an oncoming light rail train at North Seattle's Northgate light rail station. Elisio Melendez is accused of attacking a man on Mar. 19 at the Northgate light rail station, according to charging documents filed in King County Superior Court. Prosecutors allege Melendez approached the victim from behind as a train entered the station and attempted to shove him onto the tracks. The victim was able to regain his balance and avoid falling, despite being pushed twice, court records state. Surveillance footage cited in the documents shows the suspect appeared to time the attack to coincide with the train’s arrival, “making it clear that his goal was to inflict maximum harm,” prosecutors wrote. Melendez fled the station after the incident, authorities said. Investigators later identified him through video footage and located him at a nearby residential treatment facility, where he was arrested on March 24. During an interview with detectives, Melendez denied involvement, suggesting someone else may have been wearing his clothes, according to the probable cause statement. When confronted by investigators about the incident, Melendez reportedly said, "Maybe that was my twin that I don’t have.” Prosecutors have asked that bail be set at $750,000, citing concerns that Melendez poses a danger to the public and may fail to appear in court. Court records indicate Melendez has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has a documented history of mental health treatment. He previously faced a 2019 domestic violence assault charge involving an alleged incident where his sister was stabbed in the stomach, though that case was eventually dismissed two years later in 2021 after Melendez was found not competent to stand trial. According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, Malachi Venerin was spotted March 23 riding a motorcycle 103 mph on Southwest Gatlin Boulevard when he passed a traffic unit officer. Police said the officer tracked him down and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Venerin fled instead. Investigators said Venerin struck the officer with the motorcycle during the attempted stop, then crashed and took off on foot. Police said he ran to a nearby fast-food restaurant and tried to get into vehicles belonging to unsuspecting drive-thru customers as he continued trying to evade officers. Police said Venerin was eventually taken into custody. According to the department, officers found a loaded firearm in his backpack along with narcotics. Venerin now faces charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding, possession of a concealed firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person under 21, resisting without violence, driving with a suspended license, operating a motorcycle without an endorsement, driving an unregistered vehicle, possession of controlled substances involving THC cartridges and possession of marijuana with intent to sell. Police said officers recovered about 45 grams of marijuana along with baggies and a scale. The department said Venerin remained in the St. Lucie County Jail with bond set at $128,000. His motorcycle was also towed.
