We are now ticketing and towing cars that are still parked on Snow Emergency Routes. If your vehicle is on one, move it as soon as possible. If you already have a ticket on your car, that does NOT mean you won’t get another or be towed. Enforcement is ongoing until routes are cleared. Scams are on the rise, and we’re fighting back. After seeing an increase in scams targeting the elderly in our community in 2025, we developed a revamped scam education presentation and we’ve been taking it directly to our senior residents to help them recognize and report fraudulent activity and protect them from falling victim to these crooks. Over the past few weeks, our Detectives delivered scam-prevention presentations to approximately 100 seniors at the Bernice Spreckman Center, 60 seniors at the Chema Center, as well as a presentation at Mayor Spano’s Senior Advisory Board meeting. During these sessions, we reviewed the most common scams targeting older adults and shared practical tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. The presentations cover a wide range of topics, including types of identity theft, common phone and online scams, gift card scams, and steps individuals can take to protect their personal and financial information. We emphasize warning signs to watch for, such as urgent demands for payment, requests for personal information, and pressure to pay with gift cards or wire transfers. We’ve been successful in arresting suspects in several of these scam cases, but giving our community the knowledge to avoid falling victim in the first place is a great way to continue to protect our residents. Have elderly family members? Get the info you need to educate them and protect them. Interested in scheduling a presentation for your community group? Co-op Board? E-mail us at police@ypd.yonkersny.gov to request more info! #yonkerspd #yonkerspolice #yonkers #scam

Earlier this month, Stacey Schultz stopped by to donate her great-grandfather's service revolver, baton, and patrol whistle to the YPD Museum! Her great-grandfather was YPD Police Officer Arthur Doty #39, who served the City of Yonkers from 1903 to 1933. When PO Doty joined the force, he was assigned to mounted patrol at the main station on Wells Ave. After the 2nd precinct was opened in 1908, he patrolled the east side of the city on horseback. Once the use of horses was discontinued, PO Doty was assigned to traffic duty, where he worked out of the 3rd precinct at 36 Radford Street until his retirement. Ms. Schultz said that these items remained in the family long after his retirement, and she's very happy to see them find a new home with the museum, where they will be displayed for all to see! Special thanks to Retired Chief Rutledge, Sgt. Angela Vignogna, D/Sgt Javier Lugo, and Sgt. Doug Brady for their work with the museum and for setting up this special visit! Interested in seeing the YPD Museum? It's located inside YPD Headquarters 📍104 S Broadway, Yonkers, NY Visits are by appointment only- email us at police@ypd.yonkersny.gov to set it up! #yonkerspd #yonkerspolice #yonkers

Yonkers Police Department Arrests, Charges Youth in High School Stabbing Yonkers, NY- Just after 9:30 am this morning, members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to Gorton High School, located at 100 Shonnard Place in this City, on a report of a stabbing that had taken place. Arriving units located one 17-year-old male victim with several non-life-threatening stab wounds to his body. Aid was rendered on scene by the school nurse, Yonkers Police Officers, and responding paramedics. The victim was transported to an area hospital in stable condition as notifications were made to his family. Other units located the lone suspect responsible for this crime, who was being detained by school safety officers. He is being identified as a 14-year-old male student of Gorton High School. This suspect was placed into custody, and the knife used was recovered. He was transported to an area hospital to be evaluated before being processed at the Yonkers Police Department Youth Division. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed on lockdown immediately after the incident was reported to authorities and remained on lockdown until both the victim and the suspect were removed from the school. During that time, a preliminary investigation was conducted at the scene of the crime. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 10:30 am, and students returned to their normally scheduled instruction. Investigation yielded that the suspect, who brought a knife onto the school campus, was involved in a dispute with the victim. This dispute became physical, at which point the suspect stabbed the victim several times with the knife before the altercation was broken up by school staff. The suspect in this incident was charged with Attempted Assault 1st Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Attempted Assault 2nd Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree. Due to the ages of those involved, no further information regarding their identities will be released, in accordance with laws prohibiting the release of that information. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano stated, “Today’s incident at Gorton High School is alarming and is not indicative of our District. I have asked the Superintendent of Schools to work with Yonkers Police and the school administration to review security measures and convene a crisis intervention team for students at the school. Our goal is to ensure an incident like this does not happen again and provide continued support to our community. I want to reassure our families that our schools are safe and the well-being of our children remains our utmost priority.” “Safety in our schools is always a top priority for us,” said Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza. “We will continue to work with our partners in Yonkers Public Schools and their school safety team to assist however we can to ensure that our students and teachers can learn and work in the safest environment possible.” Superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools Anibal Soler, Jr, stated, “Today’s incident at Gorton High School is deeply concerning, but I want to reassure our families that this was an isolated event, and our students are safe. We are working closely with the Yonkers Police Department and will be reviewing security measures with school administration to ensure our schools remain secure learning environments. Our crisis intervention team is available to support students and staff as we move forward together. The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities, and we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for all.” NOTE: Booking charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. #yonkerspd #yonkerspolice #yonkers @YonkersSchools

Yonkers Police Department Investigates Apparent Murder-Suicide Yonkers, NY- At just after 7:00 AM on October 16, 2024, the Yonkers Police Department received a report of an unconscious person in a home located at 142 Chittenden Avenue in this City. Upon arrival, units located two adults- one male, apparently deceased, with a gunshot wound to his head, and one female with several gunshot wounds to her body. First responders attempted life-saving measures on the female, who unfortunately succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The male is identified as 54-year-old Sean O’Neill, and the female is identified as 47-year-old Arlene O’Neill. Detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to investigate. The investigation yielded that this was an apparent murder-suicide between a husband and wife who resided at that location. Investigators determined that a dispute took place, resulting in Sean O’Neill shooting Arlene O’Neill multiple times with a handgun before turning the weapon on himself. Sean O’Neill was identified as a retired NYPD Police Officer, and Arlene O’Neill was identified as a teacher in the Eastchester Union Free School District. The couple has three children who were home at the time of the incident but were physically unharmed. They are currently in the custody of family members. The City of Yonkers and the Yonkers Police Department extend our condolences to the family and friends of the O’Neill family. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or contemplating harming yourself, please dial 9-8-8 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. #yonkerspd #yonkerspd #yonkers
