BRILLIANT film - fantastic atmosphere and soundtrack. Brian Cox is incredibly effective as ''Lektor'' - and the character is cast as a sociopathic deviant/sexual sadist who literally EATS human beings. Contra Anthony Hopkins campy bullshit - wherein serial murderers are snarky gay guys who are prone to dropping clever one liners.
Its a character study on how DAMAGING the capacity to empathize with abnormal personalities is as well. Will Graham can do what normal murder police CAN'T - but its at the cost of his sanity.
This in fact plays out in reality - and its how anyone at all perceptive discerns that fools like John Douglas are abject FRAUDS. Douglas himself is too stupid to apprehend this - and that speaks for itself. People who lack self awareness can't empathize with others. The first MIND you truly know is your OWN. If you're ignorant of the self, you're useless as an empath.

Fantastic cast as well - CRIME STORY alums Dennis Farina (as Crawford) and Stephen Lang (as Lounds).
Lang is AWSUM - played STONEWALL in Gods and Generals, Ike Clanton in Tombstone, Outfit connected lawyer David Abrams in Crime Story.
The ONE thing I wish Mann had included in the screenplay adaptation was the source of Graham's PTSD - its not merely because Lektor GUTTED him with a knife when Graham made him.
Graham packs a Charter Arms .44 Bulldog with special loads - he no longer ''trusts'' the .38 special. When Graham tracked Garret Jacob Hobbes (''The Minnesota Shrike'') - a Green River Killer type of serial murderer, he entered the apartment building without backup because he heard screams.
Hobbs was stabbing his wife and threw her down the stairs at Graham. Graham emptied the cylinder into Hobbs, but Hobbs ate several rounds and kept coming before he finally went down. Graham ended up in the psyche ward because he has constant nightmares about the Hobbs incident.
