NEW: David Neuberger tells the Guardian that the status quo is failing “the fundamental aims of the law – to respect people’s right of personal autonomy, and to protect the vulnerable”. It's time for change.

@Medic11358726 That’s a good response rate for a typical survey. Presumably the others don’t care enough to have replied.

@_HPAD A survey based on 19% of surgeons. The opinion of 81% of surgeons is unknown. Hardly a resounding support of assisted dring

Royal College of Surgeons drops opposition to assisted dying. That’s big! Politicians can no longer say that UK doctors are opposed. rcseng.ac.uk/about-the-rcs/…

@Medic11358726 @shiobiwan Oh dear. Shouting at the rain. It’s going to happen so let’s make the best of it for patients and doctors. And even the surgeons have dropped their opposition.

@shiobiwan @_HPAD Hypothetical polls mean little. What matters is what happens when assisted dying is legalised. In Canada, Oregon and Australia 98-99% of doctors have not taken part. Healthcare wants nothing to do with assisted dying.

France to draw up an assisted dying law after citizens’ jury votes by 76% to have legislation. When will UK politicians join this compassionate movement? theguardian.com/society/2023/a…

@Medic11358726 Have you got a reference for that figure? And dont forget how many doctors who would participate are prevented by the religious institutions they work in

@_HPAD When faced with reality, 98% of docs in assisted dying jurisdictions refuse to take part. Why? The reality of providing an assisted death is very different to a hypothetical poll.

@Medic11358726 Not true again. The BMA survey showed many doctors prepared to participate.

@_HPAD Slight problem when French organisations representing 800,000 heathcare professionals will not take part in assisted dying. Very few docs take part in assisted deaths: Canada- 2% Oregon - 2% Australia - 1% Healthcare wants nothing to do with assisted dying.

@Medic11358726 @dignityindying @MDMDmydecision Straw man. We know that terminally ill people who enquire about AD dont want to die, but they do want the choice when the time comes. Their prognosis is irrelevant, if they do take the medication it will be in the last few days of their lives.

@ChristophLyon @Medic11358726 @marionh94109394 @historykev @dignityindying Firstly, the people who die, are not ‘actively killed’, they chose to take the medication and do so themselves Then, nobody has to participate. You have to seek to do it. So there’s no imposition. Please try to moderate your language while getting the facts right. Thank you.

@marionh94109394 It’s an odd way to describe any group of conference attendees - imagine if other conferences proposed shared characteristics for their attendees! Renal conference: such intelligent and detail-orientated people Surgery: such dexterous and hierarchical people Lol

Assisted dying: the great silence. Why are @_HPAD, @MDMDmydecision and @dignityindying promoting bad deaths often due to poor care? But SILENT on reality that over 300 UK people every day cannot access specialist palliative care. Choice is meaningless without information

@_HPAD @EndOfLifeIE @MDMDmydecision @dignityindying Religion had nothing to do with -low rankings for quality of end of life care -poor access to specialist palliative care -lack of growth in PC services Only 2% of Canadian and Oregon doctors take part in assisted deaths, or are 98% Catholic?

@EndOfLifeIE @_HPAD @MDMDmydecision @dignityindying Incorrect. No growth in Belgian&Dutch services since 2012 Most Oregon and nearly all NZ hospices refuse to take part in assisted dying AD countries rate poorly in quality of end of life care Access to specialist PC is poor in Canada and Australia
