BUBBLES are about to start BUSTING.
When bubbles bust odds are gold, silver, and Bitcoin will bust too.
Good news.
If prices of gold, silver, and Bitcoin crash…. I will be buying.
Take care.
Instead of spending $278k a year to manage Kafka in the cloud, this user is paying 4x less - $72.7k annually. 🔥
Over the 7 years since deployment, they would have spent $1.94M if running in AWS at retail prices.
Instead, they paid ~$509k to host it themselves in a data center and connect it to their AWS services via AWS Direct Connect.
The numbers 👇
🔶 $40k for the hardware (bought used)
🔶 $224k for renting the cabinets for 7 years (and a bit for paying people to change drives/etc.)
🔶 $226.6k of AWS Direct Connect network costs over the 7 years, accumulated solely from their producers (charged at $0.02/GB)
🔶 $18.4k for hosting an AWS Direct 1Gbps hosted connection over 7 years
As mentioned, it only takes them 10 hours a year to manage.
How did I calculate their $509k cost?
Easy:
💡 1.2PB with 90 day retention at replication factor of 3 translates to 51MB/s inbound
💡 AWS Direct Connect charges transfer rates of $0.02/GB for outgoing data (AWS->Data Center), and charges zero for inbound (Data Center->AWS). This means their producer's 51MB/s is charged, and whatever consumer traffic they have back into AWS is free.
As for the AWS prices, I'm simply assuming they're using the default multi-zone setup with a replication factor of three.
Tiered Storage is obviously not in use, since the cluster was deployed 7 years ago, and the feature is still not GA even today.
I am pretty happy I found this comment anecdote.
I think this is a superior way to run Kafka, especially if your data center costs are so cheap that they allow you to overprovision so much that your cluster is never close max capacity.
That eliminates a ton of the operational hurdles you might face 👌
The quoted AWS price would provision the minimum viable hardware and you'd still be at risk of capacity problems if your clients heat up. 🔥
Stop overpaying for the cloud!
@thefernandocz My scientific supervisor used to ask for deadline, and if the answer was "we still have a lot of time", the he would say that we will miss it 😁
