@Kulambq I’ve long said it’s a shame that Salinger gets culturally trapped into the ‘meme’ of Catcher. He is one of the funniest writers of the turn-of-the-century-upwardly-mobile-Northeasterner voice that we’ve got. Immensely talented & enjoyable to read, particularly his short stories.

Dos Passos was very fond of Salinger and Faulkner.

I'm not writing a critique on him, just stating what I liked/didn't and asking for recs from those who read him.

@ACJoshi @Streetcar89 There was no mannered sentences as James doesn't write any and there was no disconnect and you haven't shown any. You do need to back up your arguments to make them more than personal opinion, and nobody's prose is more attuned to psychology than James

@PedroRivie95096 @Streetcar89 Psychological aspect of it. I felt the tension, but the prose and mannered sentences created a disconnect. The reason I'm interested in trying another novel is my bias against the Gothic horror backdrop of the story.

@leb_dct_cultist @dimitripilled I've read 'Cosmos' by Sagan and loved it. Genius in his field, and also could inspire awe in laymen without getting overly technical.
Sagan's passage, after reading it aloud, easily swept for me. There's a melodic flow that you don't always find in prosaic non-fiction.

@dimitripilled Hahaha I thought the exact same. I dont read fantasy, and haven't read LeGuin yet either. When reading that passage, I figured it was human for the use of capitalization and flow but preferred the AI passage with the fever metaphor. All other excerpts went to human.

@RobertSecundus No need for the alarmism... this is true for almost any medium and has always been. Middling/average content will always be preferred by the masses especially because digestibility is a big metric. Look at Benson Boone/Taylor Swift, a hyper realistic painting>Picasso, etc
