@alaskorly When your resources for defense dwindle, tension and terror begin. That's why the Resident Evil games that give you the most ammunition are the ones that make you feel safer and less afraid. It's a narrative mechanic and concept.

@Furness_ the older games all provided you with an ample amount of ammo, just enough to let the player think "oh no I might run out of ammo soon" just before they happen upon another 30 handgun rounds or 7 shotgun shells

@alaskorly Now that you mention, I remember reading guides and it was always like "You'll find pistol bullets here. Don't use it for the zombies outside, save it for later" yet I never felt like I lacked any, not even when killing every zombie in sight.

@alaskorly I think turning zombies into bullet sponges to try and fake ammo scarcity in some of the modern games is a lazy game mechanic as well.

@JustinWhang A lot of people tended to kill every enemy they encountered as well. Now people know it's best to just run past the zombies.

@IIIHUSKIII see that's because of code veronica's abysmal design I was in my 20s when that happened to me because I took all my guns to fight steve because I assumed I'd be getting them back, so chris was left with a a few rounds and a knife it seems to be every player's 1st cvx experience

@alaskorly Imagine you're 10, playing Code Veronica, make it all the way to the last boss, just to discover you don't have enough ammo to actually kill it. It sticks with you.

@TafferKing451 the game should be giving enough ammo to have some surplus before it drops the next couple dozen rounds on the player modern horror games just don't do this at all

@TafferKing451 and somehow the alternative has become giving the player about 30-50 rounds of ammo every 2 hours for the first 5 hours of gameplay, and then dumping hundreds of rounds on you it's all horrendously balanced

When survival horror was young, players were less familiar with how to play them efficiently. As the audience matured and more entries came along, there needed to be greater pressure for newer entries to capture that original tension from unfamiliarity early on.

I've played RE games *a lot* throughout my life and one of the strangest misconceptions about 'survival horror' is that "ammo should be scarce" what part of old survival horror games ever signaled that? it wasn't silent hill it wasn't resident evil where did it come from?

@ThatTallGuy02 @TafferKing451 that's just inherently false though on my first playthrough of arrange mode in RE1 the much harder mode, done actually relatively recently, I still, at no point, found myself running empty on all guns maybe one at a time but that's nothing when I've still got 30 shotgun shells

@TafferKing451 Well for the og RE1 at least it does keep you low on ammo if you're killing most enemies in the early game and even by the late game if you're killing everything you still don't have a bunch of ammo. Ever since it's usually just an early game thing and then you min max it

@alaskorly I playe RE1 remake again a week ago. I tried to save some bullets and projectiles. Then I realized too late that I still had to kill things and ended up in the Tyrant Fight with 14 Magnum rounds and 18 projectiles (not counting gun's ammo)

@AezonVirtuous @DoomMarine666 yes by alexia my dual SMGs were at 100%, AK was at 35% with the spare mag unused, 15 magnum rounds, 30 shotgun shells, hundreds of unused bowgun arrows, and about 100 handgun rounds still left obviously you can't just kill every hunter or moth you see because they're infinite

If you play Silent Hill 2 on hard, tourist, you'll see it was signaled there. Try fucking around with ammo there, the Twin Pyramid Heads boss battle is where you better be good at melee then if you weren't gonna do that before. That and the best survival horror games have that in common to some capacity; Some of them aren't necessarily that you're saving ammo, it's that you'd rather have them for things like the snake fight in 1. Expanding it to just resource management in general, one of the best survival horrors would be REmake 1 where you had fuel to stop crimson heads that reincarnate if you don't nail them with RNG God blessings. It's been a complaint since the dawn of man that RE was getting progressively more and more action oriented, and one basis was the ammo management becoming negligible by 2 and 3, and then in 4 the plagas just conveniently shits out the bullets you fed him while there's a homeless drunk outside selling you weapons. Beyond that it's risk assessment. If you're bad at training enemies and dodging, you make up for it by being selective about ammo, but that also largely depends if you've played the game before and know what's coming up, and the level design in general. Naturally a pro is going to be swatting invisible crimson heads like flies with Chris's knife on 1hp but that's not all gamers and especially usually not on their first run.

You people crack me up, saying he was with his rights? We don’t know how him and his kids were riding up and down that road. Once I heard him say I should have run you over he lost. You people always favor the actor. Why? These are people paid millions of dollars to pretend like there’s somebody else and you fall for it every time.
