Since there’s been a lot of discussion around bullying lately, I wanted to share a thought, more as a question, or a scenario to reflect on. Think about the two main political parties in the Maldives. Now imagine them as two groups or classes within a school, constantly competing with each other. The politicians and activists as students. If you observe closely, look at how leaders and members of these “classes” behave, the way those in power often flaunt their position, ridicule, or mock the opposing side… sometimes even within formal settings like parliament itself. Also notice something else, those who are most aggressive, most confrontational, even ruthless in attacking others, often seem to be the ones who get rewarded, whether through promotions, influence, or opportunities. So if we frame it this way, political parties as school classes, and activists as students, wouldn’t we end up labeling much of this behavior as national level systemic bullying? And if that’s the case, it raises a deeper concern. If the very people leading a country normalize this kind of conduct, can we realistically expect younger generations to behave differently? Can we truly teach them that integrity, respect, and principles are the path to success? Or will they come to believe that power comes from aggression, and leadership from force? Because at the end of the day, children and young people don’t just listen to what we say, they absorb what we do. Photo: Maldivian lawmakers working

Maldives has settled the USD 400 million swap facility. Those shameless enough to exploit the situation politically, even by pushing India not to roll it over, were never standing for Maldives. They were rooting against the country, as usual.
