Kent birder, occasional twitcher, also enjoy butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies and orchids including different forms and hybrids. Outside is good!

@JulianThomas19 Took me until 20 Feb (my 4th attempt) to see the Slaty-backed Gull. This day in history has provided Naumann’s Thrush, a Black-throated Thrush and the Welsh Yellowthroat however - all of which waited until the weekend for me!

OTD 15 yrs ago I connected (at 2nd attempt) with the erratic (and slightly controversial) Slaty-backed Gull at Rainham Marshes. Also today is the 30th anniversary of the infamous 'Summer Tanager' incident at Stepaside: birdingtales.blogspot.com/2021/02/stepas…

@ELBF2010 Good memories! Franklin’s Gull = a sudden need to take Tracey to Hempsted tip for her birthday 😲 Next: stressful shopping in Street, then Forster’s Tern, Dorset. Finally, driving up a river bank in my Nova wasn’t appreciated. Tired, dark, bend came sooner than anticipated 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wow! Talk about get lucky! Turned up at the Red-Flanked Bluetail site at Crockham Hill, Kent and found it straight away and spent a superb couple of minutes with the bird all by myself!! Fantastic!

Great to see the Red-flanked Bluetail yesterday at Crockham Hill. A first for me. Showed very nicely at times. Photo from Gary Howard. Couldn't manage my own photo but attempted a sketch. @_BTO @Natures_Voice

@lizardschwartz We looked but never found who nicked our recycling bin last year - with a properly huge 34 down one side!

This is incredibly first world problems but I got myself a nice fresh new cardboard recycling bag the other week and some absolute SCRUFF has nicked it today and replaced it with their old crappy one, fuming

The lovely Eastern Black Redstart at Sheringham, Norfolk, this afternoon. Although largely elusive, it does show very well on occasions. My first ever in East Anglia following one in Kent and two in Cleveland/Yorkshire.

The stunning and rare Butterfly Coquette seen at Manu Biolodge in SE Peru on my recent trip. Even our guide could hardly contain himself with this one!

Photographed this Swallow at Balranald, North Uist late this afternoon. I think due to the lack of a dark band across the lower throat that it's the American subspecies: erythrogaster?

@MurrayOrchard Think this could be a genuinely good conservation project, but @KentWildlife don’t seem able to help themselves… immediately talking about reintroducing pine martens. Forget the reintroductions and focus on what’s clinging on now! It’s like a disease with them - it’s why I left.

On Shetland for the weekend to do some jobs around the house but kept getting distracted by birds in the garden! Started with a Coues's Arctic Redpoll then Rory Tallack had brief views of a pipit which eventually gave itself up as a Pechora. Happy to add Bullfinch later on too 😃
