Overall these AI hardware devices are worse phones that do less. But they might be useful to give a child before their first phone, or maybe a very old person.
You could just talk to the ChatGPT app and Siri and get 98% of the experience instead of buying a standalone device like this. I would bet some time this year Siri will get a big upgrade to its capability, and all of the arguments about device wide integration of AI wont hold up.
From a user experience perspective, if you're using these devices and you want to do X but it can't, you'll grab your phone. After repeating that cycle a few times users will abandon the product. It's a similar problem that VR and AR has.
Most VR or AR headsets before the Apple Vision Pro weren't really "spatial computers" because they didn't run the software people actually use. But at least they did something unique to the device, virtual reality.
These dedicated AI hardware devices on the other hand, are really just toys that do less.
If we do get to a standalone AI device, I think it's probably going to be something more like an iPhone that's in "AI Mode" where all the apps are hidden. And when a user wants to, they can switch back to "App Mode" and use it as normal.
