One of my favorite lessons from practicing witchcraft: I had this boyfriend in high school who was truly a soulmate. We’d been friends since we were 12 and we started dating at 17. When our time together was up I had a horrible time letting him go. I grieved him for multiple years before my roommate in Ireland (still one of my best friends) suggested we do a closing ritual on our relationship using a ring he had given me that I found hidden at the bottom of my makeup bag. My roommate, our other friend, and I lit candles in our dorm, built an altar for him, and meditated on the ring, and when the time felt right, we walked three blocks in silence to a bridge connecting north and south Dublin and threw the ring in the River Liffey. I was surprised by how immediate the effects were. In the next couple weeks I had a new Irish fling, and I really didn’t think about my ex at all. Three months later I started dating my now husband and really let the memory of my ex fall into the past. It was so beautiful and believable, the magic. But I still don’t think it was witchcraft that rid me of my grief. It was the act of ritualizing the end of our relationship together. It was being intentional about the closing of that chapter, really putting it into action with two people I was growing to love, that was the actual magic. Spells, rituals, ceremonies aren’t powerful because of some fairy dust they contain. The magic is in the psychological effect of ritualizing life.
