Edmonton scrapped its downtown LRT free zone in 2004 for the exact same reasons (no ridership boost + enforcement problems) and adapted just fine. Council heard what CPS had to say behind closed doors. Safety is this council’s priority. countering police advice will only make it harder to deliver. This isn’t about making riding transit harder or more expensive. It’s about making it safer. Reinvest the $5M into real security. Full council vote May 26.

Calgary’s CTrain free fare zone isn’t keeping downtown safer, it’s blocking enforcement. This week the Infrastructure & Planning Committee voted 7-4 to end it Aug 1. Transit Director of Calgary: safety is the #1 barrier to ridership. Right now anyone can board and loiter for free. Fares give peace officers the authority they need. I voted to end the free fare zone at committee and it was not an easy vote as it has been a staple of our city for a very long time.

🗞️ The United States and Israel are still, 210 days after agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza last October, deliberately withholding essential food, medicine, and shelter from children in Gaza like the two orphans filmed below. An estimated 1.9 million people remain displaced. The U.S. and Israel are restricting basic aid to pressure Hamas and other Palestinian armed resistance groups to surrender and give up their weapons, while continuing daily strikes across Gaza. On Saturday evening, an Israeli drone struck an electric bicycle in the Falluja area of Jabalia refugee camp, killing one person and wounding others, according to local media. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports 5 people recorded killed and 15 wounded in the past 48 hours across Gaza, including four newly killed and one body recovered from beneath rubble. Since the ceasefire on October 11, the ministry said 850 Palestinians have been killed and 2,433 wounded, with 770 bodies recovered from the rubble. The cumulative death toll since October 7, 2023 has risen to 72,736 killed and 172,535 wounded, according to the ministry.

The Warsaw Ghetto was made significantly smaller over time. Established by the Nazis in October 1940 and sealed on November 15, 1940, the ghetto's area was reduced multiple times, while its population density was kept at extreme, inhumane levels

As the world looks elsewhere, Israel continues to exterminate Palestinians in Gaza. Days in days out. Shame on complicit western media and all complicit governments.

Massacres against Palestinian civilians in Gaza are still being carried out by Israel. Just minutes ago, another massacre occurred in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood.

One of the harshest and most devastating videos captured in modern history… A young boy tries to comfort his little brother after the loss of their mother, while both cry in overwhelming pain and sorrow. A heartbreaking moment that will forever remain in the memory of generations.

They called it a ceasefire People in Gaza say the war never ended. Bombings continue Families are still displaced. Basic needs are still out of reach "They say the war ended. But it didn't." Where daily life is still shaped by destruction and uncertainty - from children walking to school under fire to families living in tents on the rubble of their homes And at the edge of it all, the sea remains one of the few places people can go to breathe. 'They cannot destroy the sea.

I honestly don’t care if I lose my job or end up in prison for saying this: This is terrorism. THIS - Not the resistance to it. And every single politician in the world still defending or supporting this terror, and I am looking at the depraved ghouls in charge of the EU and, in particular, German politicians, who sit every night in one of the vomit-inducing “Stammtisch”-style talk shows deflecting or defending these atrocities, should be dragged before the ICC to answer for aiding and abetting these horrendous crimes against humanity. Go ahead, take my citizenship away and deport me if you want -if opposing your crimes is not compatible with your values. But you won’t be able to escape the consequences of your actions forever. Because what you never mention in your little talk shows for your local audiences, is the fact that the world has come to look at you as what you are: a rogue state with no regard for international or humanitarian laws -hated by virtually every country in the world for consistently being on the wrong side of history.

One of the most horrifying and brutal scenes ever captured on camera in modern history. Israeli soldiers opened fire on thousands of starving Palestinians in Gaza as they ran in desperation trying to get a piece of food during the war on Gaza. A moment the world must never forget.

Israel’s abduction of flotilla activists Thiago & Saif near Greece sets a chilling precedent: that it can seize anyone, anywhere, and hold them hostage indefinitely. What other norms will be obliterated to protect genocide?

I am a witness to genocide. I am speaking from inside Gaza, and I say to the world with complete honesty: the situation here is becoming more catastrophic day after day. The shelling does not stop, and every day martyrs and wounded people fall. The war continues, while the world treats what is happening as if it were something normal, even though we are living fear and death in every moment. Most of the journalists who used to report what is happening in Gaza have been killed. Homes are being destroyed, families are being wiped out, and aid is decreasing, while hunger and fear are increasing. Children are dying amid the world’s silence. In just the past two days, more than 15 martyrs have fallen. How long will this continue? Where are those who called for a ceasefire? Where is the world that demanded protection for civilians? It feels like no one can see what is happening here anymore. Please do not stay silent. Speak out, write, share the truth, do something anything. Do not leave Gaza alone in the middle of this death and fear. We just want our voice to be heard before it is too late.

Wall Street don't care if the Average Joe pays high prices at the pump. For the Pirate State, the world doesn't begin and end with midterm elections. Politicians are replaceable. As long as those higher prices are pocketed by US firms, in USD, and stay in the US — it's a win.

@christoaivalis There is a simpler solution. More classwork. It’s just very inconvenient to the lifestyle professors have become used to.

Force them to use microfilm Force students to use physical media/documents in their projects. History is well-suited to this, because many good primary sources (and important books) are not actually digitized As such, chat GPT can't actually scrape them in the same way.

🚨 University professors have been saying AI is completely destroying learning and that we'll soon have an AI-powered, semi-illiterate workforce. Here's a glimpse into the educational apocalypse: "Sarah, a freshman at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, said she first used ChatGPT to cheat during the spring semester of her final year of high school. (...) After getting acquainted with the chatbot, Sarah used it for all her classes: Indigenous studies, law, English, and a “hippie farming class” called Green Industries. “My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.” Sarah continued to use AI when she started college this past fall. Why wouldn’t she? Rarely did she sit in class and not see other students’ laptops open to ChatGPT. Toward the end of the semester, she began to think she might be dependent on the website. She already considered herself addicted to TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Reddit, where she writes under the username maybeimnotsmart. “I spend so much time on TikTok,” she said. “Hours and hours, until my eyes start hurting, which makes it hard to plan and do my schoolwork. With ChatGPT, I can write an essay in two hours that normally takes 12.” - "By November, Williams estimated that at least half of his students were using AI to write their papers. Attempts at accountability were pointless. Williams had no faith in AI detectors, and the professor teaching the class instructed him not to fail individual papers, even the clearly AI-smoothed ones. “Every time I brought it up with the professor, I got the sense he was underestimating the power of ChatGPT, and the departmental stance was, ‘Well, it’s a slippery slope, and we can’t really prove they’re using AI,’” Williams said. “I was told to grade based on what the essay would’ve gotten if it were a ‘true attempt at a paper.’ So I was grading people on their ability to use ChatGPT.” - AI in education is a serious topic, and many schools and universities are blindly jumping into the "AI-first" wave without considering short and long-term consequences. It would be great to hear more from teachers and educators to understand potential solutions. This might be a great opportunity for rethinking the education system and how students are assessed. - 👉 Link to the full article below. 👉 To learn more about AI's legal and ethical challenges, join my newsletter's 94,700+ subscribers (link below).

Palestinian rights group PAL-Awda NY/NJ is sharply criticizing Mayor Mamdani, accusing him of contradiction: claiming to oppose the West Bank real estate expo while being supportive of a police response that kettled, beat, and pepper sprayed protesters outside it. “The SRG, who you promised to disband, drove motorbikes into protesters,” PAL-Awda wrote. “Tell us how you are preserving New Yorkers’ right to protest.”
