UEFA takes aim at FIFA in the 'Balogun' scandal!/ Ceferin rips Infantino to pieces!
The European football governing body, led by president Aleksander Ceferin, criticizes FIFA's decision to lift the suspension of forward Folarin Balogun (USA) following the red card he received in the match against Bosnia.
In UEFA's opinion, those who decided to pardon the player have caused serious prejudice:
„Yesterday's decision to replace Folarin Balogun's automatic one-match ban, following a red card, with a temporary one-year suspension crossed a red line.
Football, like any other sport, is based on rules that form the foundation of a fair, honest, and transparent competition.
Sometimes, rules are open to interpretation. Not in this case. An automatic suspension of at least one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require a decision by a competent body to come into effect.
This is an established principle in the regulations and cannot be conditioned by exceptions, especially in the middle of a tournament where several other players found themselves in the same situation and served their suspensions in accordance with the rules.
Football is the most popular sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and because there is confidence that it is played everywhere according to the same rules. We express our distrust towards such an unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustified decision”, is the UEFA press release.
