One of Test cricket's very greatest days. Well done West Indies and England, but even better for an endangered species.

@NeilManthorp I agree with both of you. Mazher's response is sad and one-dimensional. It is also pinpoints the priorities of life today and you can't blame cricketers for following the money. Sure, T20 cricket requires skill, but it's a superficial product that can't compete with Test cricket.

That is so sad and one-dimensional, Max.

South Africa's decision to send a second-string team to New Zealand totally makes sense. Any country, outside of the Big three, who is not prioritizing T20 cricket is shooting itself in the foot. South Africa was criticized last year too when they cancelled an ODI series in Australia and risked their direct WC qualification for SA20. In hindsight, it turned out to be a great move. SA20 last season was a big success, is reviving cricket in South Africa and extremely important for the financial health of players and cricket in general. Test cricket has become a luxury which only the rich boards can afford. There is every possibility that in the coming decades it will be confined to Australia, England, and India only. It has a niche audience due to which it is becoming very hard to sell. Australia and England can afford it due to the value of their TV rights and gate-money, India make so much money from IPL that they can subsidize Test cricket without worrying about the revenues. For every other board, it’s a loss-making business (especially if it does not involve a tour by the Big Three). James Anderson became a Test specialist because he could still make close to a million US dollars/year from ECB contract and match fees. A non-Big3 team can never afford to pay that much to its Test players. Players outside of the Big Three don’t want to play Tests either. If you hear something different, it’s just a lip-service to Test cricket. Every budding cricketer is aiming for contracts in the T20 leagues. And any current non-Big3 player who considers himself a Test specialist is because he does not have the skill to excel in the short formats. It’s unrealistic to think that teams like Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka etc will be able to compete with Australia, England and India in Test cricket in the coming decades. ODIs future is bleak too. So, the only format where they can compete is T20s so it should take priority. Change is the only constant in life and importance of cricket is moving towards shorter versions. The sooner you realize T20 will be the pinnacle, the better it will be.

Watched the last day of the golf in the Swiss mountains. Three-months pro Ludvig Aberg was sensational. Never heard of him before last week, but he has an amazing swing and a calm confidence. No surprise he was a pick for the Ryder Cup.

@tester_mick @1116sen @WhateleySEN True, but so what? Remember, Australia won the first two tests. They got lucky in Manchester but rain has influenced many games in the past, many in favour of England. Get over yourself.

@1116sen @WhateleySEN For crying out loud. Rain has just put an end to what could have potentially been one of the greatest comebacks in cricket history. England fans are well within their rights to say that the Aussies have been very fortunate.

Upset CSA did NOT schedule Kingsmead for the Boxing Day test v India. 2023 is the centenary year of test cricket at the ground and Durban has the biggest diaspora of Indians in the world. Plus the fact that we played our first test there after isolation. Great opportunity lost.

WONDERFULLY THE GREAT GAME 🏏 and @twitter has allowed for many ‘opinions’ on the #Starc #Ducket catch…including mine…😅 AMAZING how the majority of ex players and professional coaches / commentators like @VincentBarnes60 @geoffreytoyana @MikeHaysman @RickyPonting etc. all believe it to be OUT and a FAIR CATCH - as that’s what we’ve all seen many times before in play, and it is always given or taken as out. Marais Erasmus is also an ex player - so am surprised but still always respect his opinion… This whole situation however just highlights the CONFUSION and SUBJECTIVITY of “what is in control” and “what is not in control”… The @ICC need to clear this up… The INCONSISTENCIES are the key, as look at the #SteveSmith catch which was given out & then the #MitchellStarc catch not…🤷 The only thing in my humble opinion that #Starc did wrong here was that he was a bit ‘sloppy’ on the way he slid and turned his hand to face along the grass - which has created this whole confusion - as I still personally think that the catch was taken and he was in control…🧐😅🙏🏻 #subjective #Ashes #Ashes23 NEW DAY - with the first 2 hours of play being BIG for both Team @englandcricket & @CricketAus 🏏🏏

What the hell is happening at Loftus! A 75-minute delay because of floodlight failure. And still no TV update, just interminable highlights of other games.

RIP Martin Amis. What a shock, and what an awful loss to the literary world. The silence occasioned by his death, and that of his great friend Christopher Hitchens, is profound.

The modern Republican party is devoted to three ideas: 1) That power is only legitimate if Republicans wield it 2) Power must be acquired by any means necessary 3) And the party is accountable to no one once it has it It's a recipe for fascism.

Harry Brook was sublime, but the dismissals of Joe Root, Broad and Foakes was rubbish (test) cricket. But then I'm from an older generation.

The SA-England ODI series was a wonderful advert for the ugly sister of international cricket: ODIs. Tons of runs, dramatic finishes and good crowds.

Humiliation at the hands of the Netherlands – including three SA-born players, Roloef van der Merwe, Colin Ackerman and Stephan Myburgh, who played key roles in our demise. You have to wince.

@cameronponsonby Nothing to do with this... Thanks so much for your excellent piece on the pain of being a batsman. Made a lot of unsentimental sense to me. I am Patrick, Nick Compton's uncle and Ben Compton's dad. Keep on trucking with your "pen".
