What is “data bycatch”? It is data which does not belong in the user’s own personal context window. It is “accidentally” drawn into the analysis, producing outputs which are the product of some good data and some junk data. For instance, non-legal data in training data for legal-search queries. It is not what you are fishing for. It is. it in scope. It is what we would call in Law, “not relevant.” This data bycatch tampers with the AI model’s analysis. Sure you can rag train it and vector database to avoid all the junk data and only give you what is in your scope. Yet, the fundamental questions remain, why are we doing this? Why must the user’s needs subordinate to a giant model? Aren’t there other ways we could engineer our data from the beginning to ensure better results? ‘If you don’t need it, don’t eat it.’
