Homeless people are using dogs to test drugs for them on Skid Row in Los Angeles, California. Non-profit group Starts With One Today says dogs are being abused, thrown away, sold for drugs, neglected, and fed drugs to make sure there is no fentanyl. Animal advocates are ripping Mayor Karen Bass and other elected officials for not taking enough action. “We’re coming out here, risking our lives to help these dogs with no support from the government,” said volunteer Joey Tuccio.

A new study from the Fiscal Alliance Foundation found the state wasted over $1 billion in SNAP improper payments in just a two-year span as enrollment surged 40% to more than 1.1 million recipients. The DTA is snapping back at the report, claiming it reflects a “fundamental misunderstanding” of their operations, uses “outdated data,” and conflates payment errors with fraud. But with Massachusetts posting one of the worst error rates in the country (14.1% in FY24, far above the national average), whistleblower reports of rampant and unabated fraud, and billions on the line, excuses and more hiring aren’t cutting it. Taxpayers already crushed by high taxes, housing costs, and energy bills are footing the bill for this broken system. When is Beacon Hill going to stop the spin, demand real accountability, and fix the oversight instead of defending endless expansion? Working families deserve better than this.
