Section 8 is actually worse than its described by its most vehement polemists- its not "if you're doing nothing, you'll get all the help and resources forever"- its a labyrinthine system where some lucky few indeed do get housing and the rest wait in limbo for housing that might open up in years when shelter is an immediate need Many counties and states do not even have open *waiting lists* for Section 8, which means people arent even allowed to join the years long queue. If you are lucky enough to get on the waiting list, it can still take a decade If one *does* ever actually receive Section 8, it is an extreme poverty trap. In attempts to regulate the program to eliminate waste and fraud, the economic actions of its recipients are tightly monitored. Furthermore, Section 8 does NOT mean "free housing"; it means the rent is capped at a certain percentage of ones income. The rules are labyrinthine and strict. Simple violations, which include things like getting a part time job, can result in a person losing their housing The problem with social programs is that in the attempt to "encourage people to work" and "eliminate fraud and waste", a system is created that both keeps resources out of people's hands and keeps people poor. You do not have the option to take risks when you are on social services, even though risks are how one leaves poverty, because failure means losing *everything*, including the necessities for survival like food and shelter The only solution is UBI and the guarantee that all people can have access to the necessities for survival- food, shelter, clothing, medicine. Locking people into economic status on threat of death does nothing for no one. By ensuring everyone has their basic needs met no matter what, everyone will be free to take risks, to get a job, and to contribute to society, rather than being kept out of those endeavors for fear they will lose their food and housing
