Today is the 33rd anniversary of the day the IRA bombed Warrington town centre and killed my son Tim and 3 yr old Johnathan Ball. Words can never describe how losing a child leaves a huge hole in your heart and your family. Eternal love Tim ❤️❤️

Devastatingly sad that the brilliant broadcaster and journalist Jenni Murray has died aged 75. I have met her several times recently and was so impressed with her staunch feminism, great writing, wit, and empathy. RIP Jenni. You were a treasure and will be much missed.

Quite the lede from The Economist: and quite the cover. “Although President Donald Trump says he has “destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military Capability”, the 0% that remains is playing havoc with the global economy.” And now quite the cover: @glcarlstrom

I'm disappointed that the CEO of @TravelodgeUK did not turn up to yesterday's meeting to listen to MPs concerned about women’s safety in their hotels. I hope there will be opportunities in the future to understand the steps the hotel industry are taking to address VAWG.

The International Energy Agency is this morning suggesting people should work from home, avoid air travel and drive at lower speeds to help tackle impending oil shortages The International Energy Agency (IEA) has issued a list of “demand side measures” that governments, businesses and households could take to alleviate the impact of soaring oil prices and disruption to supplies It has also recommended that ministers could reduce road speed limits, reduce car access to designated zones in large cities and give vehicles with odd-numbered plates access on different weekdays to those with even-numbered plates. Fatih Birol, the IEA executive director, said: “The war in the Middle East is creating a major energy crisis, including the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. In the absence of a swift resolution, the impacts on energy markets and economies are set to become more and more severe.” The report also recommended that travellers “avoid air travel where alternative options exist” and switch from private cars to public transport

Terry Hall should have been 67 today. Gone far too soon. This, written with Ian Broudie is one of his finest moments, and this version by far the most poignant: youtu.be/9pfHxJcztqM?si…

Trumpflation: analysis by @PhilAldrick Trump and his war in Iran are now determining monetary policy in the UK. That’s effectively the assessment of the Bank of England, which warned Britons will pay the price. Had there been no war, the BoE would have cut interest rates by a quarter point today to 3.5%. Now traders see an 80% chance of three interest rate hikes this year to 4.5%. Those shifts will hit households hard. Mortgage rates are climbing. Higher energy bills will cost Britons £13 billion more. It means more fiscal problems for Rachel Reeves as government borrowing costs rise and growth is hit. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Rupert Hickmont was one of New Zealand's most promising young batsmen, making his FC debut aged 17 and touring Australia with NZ in 1913-14. He enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1915 and was killed in action on the Somme in September 1916. He was 22. Wisden lamented he "was probably the most promising young cricketer in the Dominion, and his early death will be felt severely when the game is resumed"

America launched a war on Iran, the war continues, and yet the US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent has said: “in the coming days, we may unsanction the Iranian oil that’s on the water.” According to Bloomberg, Bessent told Fox Business that Iran has about 140 million barrels afloat and “depending on how you count it, that’s 10 days to two weeks of supply.” So Trump won’t negotiate with Iran to end the war but he will allow them to sell their oil. Extraordinary, even by recent Washington metrics
