@interceptours For me, the whole of 1990's was great. I was lucky to have spent about 6-7 years of that decade in Bangkok. For me, it went downhill around the year 2000, when they introduced the 2 am venue-cuefew thing, because I was also into late night clubbing.

Ray's Scottish Bar on Sukhumvit Road down from Soi 22 (next to the 7/11, now an Indian tailors) circa 2001. Dao pouring the drinks and Suitcase Eddie at the end of the bar there. #Bangkok #Thailand

@interceptours I remember the ฿500 being collected when you handed your ticket and passport over at the check in desk, and then later changed to paying at the booth

25 years ago you had to pay to leave Thailand. You would go to a booth at Don Mueang Airport and pay 500thb in cash, receive a ticket, which was punched on exit to immigration so it could not be reused. It went up to 700thb before it was integrated into your flight cost as a tax.

@interceptours In the 2000s you had to pay $100 to get an exit visa from Indonesia unless you were a tourist. That hurt for a family.

@interceptours I remember back in 2002 or so barely having the money for that. I had to sell all my Lonely Planet books to a stall on Soi Rambuttri just to get enough together for the van to the airport and the exit fee.

At the front of a Thai 'tourist' train heading back from Kanchaburi circa 2001. I actually drove this train for several kilometres. In fact, there were several tourists that got to actually drive the train, with the Thai driver supervising. Wouldn't happen these days.

Another photo of Ray's Bar or the 22 Bar as it was known. This time Ray on the right, Nok (his wife) on the left and their daughter in the middle. Circa 2001.

Quick fact check on the Community Notes: The 2024 tax rule applies to standard residents, not LTR Wealthy Global Citizen visa holders, who are exempt from personal income tax on foreign income under Royal Decree No. 743, verified with our Thai tax lawyer. And we never claimed to own freehold land. We own a freehold condominium unit, which foreigners can absolutely do under the Thai Condominium Act up to 49% of a development. Easy mistakes to make if you’re working off general rules rather than the actual legal structure. Watch the full process here before adding context next time 👇🇹🇭 youtu.be/_5ctELx6vRU?si…

Patrick built his cocaine network behind a profile picture of himself dressed as a priest. Bangkok police pulled him off Silom Soi 1, found 1.5 million baht above his bathroom ceiling, and watched him cry that he didn’t want to die in a Thai prison.

Bangkok Police Arrest Alleged Cocaine 'Bigboss' With 1.5 Million Baht Stashed Above His Bathroom Ceiling Yesterday's operation in Bangkok targeted a 47-year-old Nigerian man known by the alias Patrick, who Deputy Bangkok Police Commissioner Teeradej Thammasuthee described as a Bigboss-level figure in Thailand's cocaine trade. Officers picked him up at the mouth of Silom Soi 1, and because of his build, close to 10 officers were needed to restrain him. Three other network members were also arrested, a 60-year-old Swiss man in Nonthaburi and two Thai men in the Rama III area. Seizures included 30 grams of cocaine, a car, roughly 400,000 baht in gold jewelry and brand-name watches, and about 1.5 million baht in cash stuffed above the ceiling panels of Patrick's bathroom. He reportedly told investigators the money came from Nigeria and that he wasn't hiding it, he was "keeping" it. He also said he was shocked to be caught after running the operation for so long. In Khaosod's separate writeup on the same bust, he broke down and asked to be sent back to Nigeria, saying he didn't want to grow old and die in a Thai prison. The trail to Patrick runs back through two earlier Metropolitan Police operations. In October 2025, officers disguised as construction workers rolled up nine suspects on Sukhumvit 11 in the "Take Down Black-Shadow Nana" op. In January 2026, the so-called cocaine queen was arrested with three associates and over 7 million baht in assets seized. Deputy National Police Chief Samran Nuanma ordered the follow-through, and investigators traced the chain up to Patrick.

Deporting people back to war Zones and places where they may come to harm would break international law, then Britain would lose trade contracts, defence allies' sanctions on brit's travel and any influence on the world stage Good luck with making Britain entirely self sufficient
