Please Don't Speculate!
- Essa Suleiman, April 2026
In the Golders Green case, after charging Somali-born British citizen Essa Suleiman with three counts of attempted murder, Counter Terrorism Policing Commander Helen Flanagan explicitly urged the public to "avoid any further speculation" so justice could run its course.
Officials described him as a lone actor while heavily emphasising his mental health issues: he had only recently been discharged from South London and Maudsley NHS mental health services, lived in supported housing for people leaving secure hospitals, had a history of violence and previous mental health admissions, and suffered a "medical episode" after arrest.
Political responses condemned antisemitism but stayed measured, with police and media focusing on his personal psychiatric background and a closed 2020 Prevent referral alongside the terror declaration.
- 36-year-old Scottish man, June 2026
In the recent Edinburgh attacks near a Sighthill mosque, there was no "don’t speculate" statement from police or politicians. Instead, authorities quickly framed the incidents, assaults on five Muslim men with a machete as motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the suspect appears to be "motivated by anti-Muslim hatred" and would face the full force of the law, while Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed horror at violence "motivated by anti-Muslim hatred" and stressed there is no place for it. Counter-terrorism police were involved early with strong public condemnation of Islamophobia. Mental health received little to no emphasis in statements or reporting.
Why the difference in approach?
- A Muslim/immigrant-background attacker is politically damaging because it highlights uncomfortable patterns around mass migration, integration failures, and Islamist extremism, the largest terror threat category in the UK. So the system defaults to mental health explanations, "don’t speculate," and lone-actor framing to protect the mass migration narrative.
- A white/native attacker is far more politically useful because it allows the government and media to label any native backlash or frustration as far-right extremism and Islamophobia, justify more surveillance on critics of immigration, and distract from the underlying causes of public anger.
One type of violence harms the narrative, the other can be weaponised to reinforce it.
So remember people... please don't speculate.

😮 A shocking and deeply worrying video is circulating showing hundreds of illegal migrant men gathering in what were once family-friendly parks. These spaces used to be full of families and children playing. Now many people fear they are becoming dominated by adult men who entered the country illegally, raising serious concerns about public safety and the protection of children. Out of control….
…Police Harass @AyAudits_c4n for filming in a public place and say he is creating a “breach of the peace” yet it is the Police officer that is clearly the one aggravating the situation…another officer then follows him around and quotes “breach of the peace” again!… when all we are merely doing is filming in a public place…@AyAudits_c4n

These tweets are unacceptable.
They need investigation.

I am horrified by news of the attack in Edinburgh. I am grateful to the police and emergency services for their bravery in apprehending the suspect and for their speedy response in attending to the victims. The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. There is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims. I know it is not who we are as a country.

Same city, 90 days apart.
One written off as mental health.
One will "face the full force of law".

Absolutely appalling. No one should face violence on our streets. The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. I will not tolerate this - he will face the full force of the law. My thoughts are with those who are injured and I thank the police and the emergency services for their response. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
