Trade unions from across the Gulf region met with the ITUC today to discuss the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its devastating impact on workers. Representatives from Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine and Yemen strongly condemned the aggression by all parties and stressed the urgent need to respect international law, national sovereignty, and the right of people to decide for their future. ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle warned that the war is already having severe consequences for the region’s economies, with rising unemployment and poverty. He underlined that the crisis is also undermining social dialogue and putting workers’ rights at risk. The particular challenges faced by migrant workers and other vulnerable workers across the region was highlighted together with the need for stronger unity among trade unions to defend their rights. Ending the war and returning to dialogue must be the priority.
