@j_maloney @ArnoldViersen So what's the deal, is @dckurek rambling like a fucking idiot to prevent the bill from getting killed in committee (Because it would look bad for MPs to vote against it in the HoC)?

How far are Conservatives willing to go to censor their own team? Entering hour 4 of a Conservative filibuster with the sole goal of stopping @ArnoldViersen from presenting his own Bill at Justice Committee. Free Arnold from CPC witness protection program. #WheresArnold

@gjcharlet Memory of me in a theatre by myself wishing someone was with me so I could complain the movie stole my fence stretcher idea then realizing that probably explained why I was at a theatre by myself

Feels like whack-a-mole with food myths this morning. China does not use hair from humans to make L-cysteine amino acid. It is traditional to just shave a baby's head at the 100 day mark.

Different countries have different traditions - we buy our kids teeth off of them through an imaginary being ffs. In Japan at the 1 year mark toddlers carry a block of mochi for a bit. This does not mean they believe in child labour. (Teen at 1 doing his isshou mochi)

My Swiss dermatologist told me the itchy spot on my back was nothing to worry about, it was just my dead parents contacting me to resolve something. She also suggested I see her Reiki friend, but if I didn't believe it would work, it wouldn't work.

@elamin88 It should be against the law for there to be a discourse about a movie before the trailer's out

Everyone who has seen THE BRUTALIST is like “okay so it’s possible this may save cinema” and everyone who has only read about THE BRUTALIST is like “sorry, movies should be 90 minutes”

Antigone Journal
Antigone Journal@AntigoneJournal·
Since the month we launched, way back in March 2020, we have enjoyed periodical contributions from online rent-a-sage Bret Devereaux, but we really do hope this is the last time. The pretext has always been that our wee Classics website committed irreparable sin before we even got out of harbour, and twice no less, by (i) running a piece on Apuleius, about a new book on the Golden Ass (co-edited with a Classicist), republished from a literary magazine (naughty @Lit_Review and @wwnorton...) but written by a Princeton professor who has (certainly!) contentious ethical views on other matters, and (ii) not editing retrospectively the byline of a piece by a Princeton classicist (married to one of our editorial team, and a great mind, on both counts there is no doubt) when controversies arose on, again, other matters from the piece (which tackled Greek and Latin philology, what else?). In neither case would we do anything differently now: those two pieces can still be read on our website (links below) and you can make up your own mind about those, on your own terms and as you see fit. That is the entire point of an open-access website... Or, if it suits you better, you can head straight to the conclusion you seek and use these pieces as a convenient talking point when your interlocutor starts to yawn. For us, after careful assessment of the particulars and peculiarities,m in play, this is a case of muting not blocking, the latter being a move that we strenuously avoid in all but the most extreme cases of public sociopathy (manifested by just one account so far). Thanks for your forbearance and, indeed, support.🤜

@BretDevereaux @PeterSinger Ah yes, your vaunted principles shine through yet again. Editors should be silent as authors lie publicly about the conduct of those editors. What a fraudulent way to behave, then and now.

@JohnBrownlow It sounds so natural that it almost seems like it should be easy to play; then you see him play and it absolutely isn’t, but he still makes it look effortless.

Every single guitar tutorial book available in a small provincial town taught you pentatonics and blues licks and here was a perfectly composed, melodic solo that whizzed through keys and chromatic notes at blinding speed and made perfect total sense.

@ianmcc I was going to mention that one; at that time I worked at the old Perkins and lived at Portage & Whitewold. If those idiots only hurt themselves I honestly wouldn't care, but it never works out that way.

It is striking to me that, as much as a lot of modern pop history on ancient warfare loves 'elite' and 'crack' units of troops, the armies I can think of that really have 'elite' units are Hellenistic armies, which of course famously get wrecked by the Romans, who don't.

I won. Going to Victoria State finals in July. Got a silver though - no one has managed a gold. Technique outstanding - need to practice more under pressure.
