This is exactly why movements like StopKillingGames took off. When anything and everything is digitized, unless you have offline services, companies will do this . They can't sell you new things if your old thing works as intended. So the only choice is to brick your device.

I haven't heard of anyone buying a product from an ad in 15 years, in fact I constantly hear how it makes people hate companies and avoid their products. What purpose do ads serve now
両刀使い ・ Ryou ☭ (TRANSLATION COMMS OPEN•フリー翻訳者)@gloopbastard

does forcing people to watch ads actually increase sales like at all or is it just companies throwing money for the sadistic enjoyment of making your day just a little bit worse

Scrap your books, they said. Get a Kindle, they said. You'll have a whole library on one device, they said. In my brief life, I have owned records, cassettes, CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs. I have never seen a technology that didn't end up defunct or superceded. I'm keeping my books.

This is A NIGHTMARE. Amazon is bricking old Kindles, including my beloved Kindle 5 (with the side buttons). I hate the touch screen versions, I've tried them and I'm always accidentally flipping pages.

It's one thing to say older devices don't support some new feature or service or operating system. But to make the deliberate choice to brick a device that's working perfectly well, in order to force your customer to buy a new one, is a hostile act of predatory capitalism.
